Hi,

I have requested an ADSL speed upgrade and then my phone line voice and adsl went down 2 days later.
Unsure if it was related to the new service ordered, Telkom logged this as a fault for me.
The line was the next day voice and ADSL but pending ADSL speed increase.
The line then went down 2 days later after, and not it is only ADSL which is down NOT voice.

Mystery, my ADSL line is Synching at 4096 which is what the ADSL router says.
I have tested 2 ADSL routers and confirmed my user name and password with my ISPs.
I have tried 2 ISPs and also the Telkom guest account, BUT i can not authenticate and my Internet light is not on.

When calling Telkom they say a technician is dispatched to the cabling area.
The same person told me to ask 10210 to open the internet for me, which doesnt makes sense to me.
Also asked was to change my line from bridged to router mode.
The Telkom call center says they can not see me synching and even after a port reset.
So i dont understand how i am able to see my 2 ADSL routers show me that i am syching.

Never had this before.

Is this just co-incidence that there is a line issue or is this what happens when you ask for an ADSL speed increase?

Call your cell from your ADSL line and check if your number shows up.

This just happened to me. I ordered an upgrade to 20 from 10 and within 10 minutes of that call my line went down and has been down since. I phoned the tech support center and logged a fault. What are the chances of this being a coincidence.

It took me a few months (dozens of phone calls and visits to the Telkom shop) to even get an ADSL line set up in the first place. I would like to increase my speed, but the headaches I experienced to just go online make me wonder if it's worth it. I rely heavily on my internet and although I bought a prepaid 100GB data with Cell C for backup, I am not prepared to deal with Telkom again.

I am subscribing to this thread, hoping to hear more feedback from others who have successfully done so. @iChocolate, please let us know if/when you do get the upgrade.

I upgraded mine last week from 4Mbps to 10Mbps, phoned Telkom on Thursday around 4:30pm, they said it could take "up to 5 days", but it was syncing at 10Mbps by the time I checked the next day - I checked around Midday (was out for the morning).
Had no trouble at all, except that since Saturday it's only been synced at 8Mbps but that doesn't totally surprise me given the "signal" isn't that great, I'm probably too far from the exchange for solid stable 10Mbps.

My upgrade is successfully done as of Monday.
This sounds ridiculous but you need to call 10210 and speak to at least 5 people.
Let them check your line and see what else they can tell you.
Some are really ones that tell or do more than others.
To verify a story you need to take an average from the 5 calls you made.
Those guys are just doing their job they dont really care about going extra mile for you, and you cant blame them.
You do get the guys that are just simple-simple they tell you what the progress is and they say a technician will be in touch with you, really the bare minimum.
Some will have a sexy voice or some will actually call the technician and find out whats going on.
Anyways, so my line syncs at 10 but for god sake its a mystery, i was downloading at 900 odd k last night from a local Internet Solution FTP site and then all of a sudden it went down to like such a low speed. (Linux ISO as a test)
I was told to download a Linux ISO for torrent testing also.

Here is my posting - Read it and comment here if you like ?

So based on this really nippy download, although it didnt last too long , i am convinced that I can get 10 or at minimum 8 megs.
The challenge is to get the right message across to the technician with out interruption and actually trying to listen to me and or do proper tests and fix the line issue.

By the way the 5 calls to 10210 is no joke, one of them actually said that my line had noise on it.
Which is why it grates me the other guys dont test or tell you the same thing.

I believe there must or has to be an interference or fault somewhere on the cable.
She is telling me she is the technician and that the deals with the underground cables.
Just a little irritating as last week she was telling me to "call 10210 to open the internet" and the other message was for them to "please change my ads lline from bridge mode to router mode."
ffs.

At least the consultant(like i said i had called 5 consultants) and i swear this chick , her name was Tina, from the Durban office , she was so bloody helpful and straight to the point.
She told me this technician that gave me the information was being ignorant and so she escalated it to her line manager and the next day she came to the house.
But my goodness she just wanted to make my internet available , she didnt care about quality of the line bugger all.
She did admit that the line was not tested properly because she had claimed the line was up YET i was not able to connect to a service provider.
Also 10210 could not see my syncing either. Something was dodgy.

New Services Department (10213) did confirm this on Monday that my line upgrade is done.

I am just annoyed now that my connection is not great.
And i think it is really not, testing with different ISPS, the speed i get on downloads at times is like sub 100 kb/s which is really rubbish.
On my 4 meg i was always getting 380 to 430 kb/s which is extremely good for a 4 meg line.
I remember when i stayed in Mondeor i was getting 6 meg sync but i would only get 399 kb/s maximum - the scenario here was that i stayed 4km from the exchange (still very good).

I now stay, according to theory speedguide.net , about 3 km from the exchange.
When i called Telkom they told me 2.8km.

So now i at least know for sure (and based on my amazing 4 meg experience here) that i should at least get 8 megs.
Telkom said 10 was available which is why i just said, okay , go for it.

you know the funny tjhing is that when i moved here in October last year, this guy that was busy with one of the poles here for a connection to another house, just in passing by conversation , i asked him what speed i could get here. He tuned me 2 megs if you are lucky.

You never really know if the chickens have hatched.
You know these guys, completely amazing.

Anyways i will pursue the escalation i made to have these guys fix my line, since they closed it and didnt even come back to me.

Really amazing.
