Telkom tell me I'm on a 4mb line.

My Netgear router says the following under Router Status:

DownStream Connection Speed 640 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 512 kbps

Is this 4mb?

No it isn't its 640kbps download speed and 512kbps upload

The reason u not getting your full 4mb is because u could be far away from the exchange or your line quality is bad so you sync at a lower speeds to avoid disconnects.

Not much you can do - there is no way Telkom will even blink at you.

Yup, you're on 4Mbps, but the maximum speed you'll get with that profile is 0.64Mbps.

You're probably too far from the DSLAM.
Could you please post your Line Attenuation, SNR margins & Connection Speed (if it changed)? It should be on the same webpage as that connection speed.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 704 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 49.0 db 27.0 db
Noise Margin 10.0 db 12.0 db

That's from the stats page. The line isn't actually slow. Good old youtube plays fine. I'm just wondering why it doesn't say 4096 if it's a 4mb line.

If u want good speed get - Telkom 3g - Do 3G - W-CDMA - 7.2Mbits. I get 400 KBytes/s faster downloads than vodacom. I get 1200KBytes/s = 9.83Mbits downloads from Telkom 3g - Do 3G

Best bet is to phone Telkom ask them to raise it to 4mbps and then if necessary drop it until its stable. If 640 is really the best they can do then tell them to shove it & go back to 512 & pay 512 price.

Nice Quote Havoc. Hadn't seen that till now.

Waaib: There is just no way that you'll be able to sync reliably at 1Mbps or faster with that crappy Netgear modem.

I would suggest that ditch that crappy Netgear router for a D-Link ADSL modem.
What you could also do, is keep the Netgear router and use it as a WiFi AP + switch and then just buy a D-Link DSL-2500U (ADSL + 1x LAN port).

With the D-Link you should be able to get at least 3Mbps.

For now, I would suggest that you unplug all your telephones, fax & alarm from the Telkom line and plug in your Netgear in directly (bypassing all filters) on the Telkom line, and then see if the Line Attenuation decreases and the SNR margin increases.
Just note that the SNR margin would drop about 3dB per 1Mbps increase in the Downstream Connection Speed AND you need at least 6dB SNR to sync but 12dB is safe to say that it should sync reliably.

btw, look here .
1. min sync rate: 640kbps; max sync rate: 4096kbps
2. min sync rate: 640kbps; max sync rate: 3072kbps
3. min sync rate: 640kbps; max sync rate: 2048kbps
4. min sync rate: 640kbps; max sync rate: 1024kbps

Couple calls to Telkom. A few filter box things plugged into lines. Some palying around with synch speed on telkom side and ...

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4096 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 48.0 db 26.5 db
Noise Margin 10.0 db 12.0 db

I also recently upgraded to 4Megs and the fastest download I get is around 1.5Mbps. I use a Windows 7 gadget for this because I'm not too sure how to do the whole Line Attenuation, SNR margins & Connection Speed etc...thing so please could someone school me. Do I need to put the 10.0.0.1 or something in the address bar?
I have a Billion 400G modem.
Excuse my noobiness.
