ADSL Speed Test

I am new to the forum so i might be asking a question that has already been asked.

I recently just got a 2MB line with Telkom and i was testing it last night and this morning. Then i noticed that i am not getting what i paid for: the PING = 31, DownloadSpeed = 1.4, UploadSpeed = 0.39 MB Per Sec. Shoulnt i be getting 2 MB per sec speed on both downloads and uploads. And when i try to download a video i get a speed of 45 kbps to 60kbps.

Well actually you are, you pay for a connection "up to 2Mbps". Regarding upload speeds the highest you 'can' get on a 2Mb line is at most 0.5Mbps, I wish it were higher but sadly it isn't. Speed test isn't an exact science if you were downloading while doing the speed test you could have got a lower result.

What medium were you downloading the video by? e.g. via HTTP/torrent/nzb that can vary the speed. Try downloading something else. You may be a fair distance from the exchange too, if your speeds continue to be low (and yours don't seem to be that bad) you may have a line fault or a congested exchange. If you are concerned just phone telkom and ask them to check your adsl line, but it probably is fine.
