Adsl speed tests- how accurate are they?

I use DU Meter on my PC and have noticed that the results obtained from various speed test sites vary greatly from the download speeds shown by this software. In general my results from various test sites differ so much as to make the info practically useless. Are there any accurate reliable speed test sites that anyone can recommend?
