Today at 11:20 Zulu, my ADSL link was upgraded from 1Mb to 2Mb. I downgraded it about 6 months ago from 2Mb to 1Mb because of losing Sync all the time. Telkom spent 1 whole day at my house, but the bottom line is I am 5.3Km from the exchange (Figures from Telkom). At 1Mb the line stay up all the time, SNR is acceptable, and everyone is happy (except my son....it must be faster). With the upgrade to 2Mb this morning the Sync problem came back, and I was forced to phone and have it set down to 1Mb. Now the link stays up again.

No I was wondering, if I would buy a better ADSL Modem/Router, could it possibly solve the problem? But where can one look for comparisons for different routers? I also have several other routers and access points dotted throughout the house using WDS. I will have to find something that will be supporting WDS again.

At 1Mb my modem is running SNR-Up 8.0, SNR-Down 14.5. At 2Mb it runs At SNR-Up 8.0, SNR-Down between 4.5 and 8.0. Maybe a better router will perform better.

I need some pointers please.

Why does your son need it at 2MB?

I wasnt happy with my 16dB SNR @ 4Meg, so i told telkom to drop it to 2Meg and its at 21dB and thats 2.3KM from exchange.

Getting a new router will not help (unless its very very old 5 years+, you would either need to move closer to the exchange or get an alternative type of internet ie HSDPA/LTE/3G

Also what is your ADSL settings set to (ADSL/ADSL2/ADSL2+)

That's stupid. You only need 6db for a decent ADSL sync. 12db is considered VERY good.

The man is into online gaming. And most of the time Skype is running with the game so the buddies can chat. Currently my ADSL setting is ADSL (Only option on my router) and the mode is set to Annex A, and modulator to G.DMT.

6db intermittent ppp/service affecting.
12db is good. Anything higher is VERY good

Ask the call Telkom call centre to change your modulation to ADSL2. It does have a longer reach than GDMT and ADSL2+.
MIGHT help with the snr. Changing your router wont help.

Teamspeak FTW!

I'm sitting with the same problem. My distance is 7-ish km from the exchange. I'm currently syncing at 1.5mb with occasional disconnects (once every few hours).

I'm using a Netgear dgn2200 (I think that's the model) which is able to sync higher than two other modems. I'll upload a spreadsheet I did with my SNR margins with each modem after work.

You well over the acceptable distance for dsl bud. Careful Telkom doesn't downgrade you to 384K

They did drop me on two occassions after having my line died but I rectified that with prompt phone calls. What's the point of paying for a 1mb service when I'm syncing at 384kbps.
