Hi,

Newbie Here. Just got my ADSL hooked up yesterday. Got the 384k line with the 1Gig cap from Telkom. My question is, what transfer speeds can i expect? I got 25kb/s yesterday on download. Hooked up my PS3 so that i could download a game from the Playstation Store. Its a 603MB file, so i left it on overnight. Started the DL at 9pm and when i got up this morning at 6am i had only downloaded 38MB. This doesnt seem right to me. I cant get through to ADSL Help Line so im stumped

I get about 40kB/s (384 line) on some downloads, all depends on the server congestion I guess, theoretically you should get 48kB/s at best, but I don't think that is achievable.

if you lucky it should have been around 4 hours max. But folks have been mentioning that things are a bit slow lately, in the last few days. Can you see if you where disconnected at all during the night ? Other things like standby mode on your system could have stopped the download.

You should be getting 44kB/s, but what you need to do is get a better way to download the file. It probably stalled a couple of times and then restarted from the beginning. This probably also means that your 1GB cap is almost all used up.

Can you download the file to PC using "Free download manager", put it on a USB drive and get it onto the PS3 that way instead?

How do i check this? On my router?

I know this can be done for the PS3 Firmware updates, but i doubt it can be done for games. You have to sign in via the PS3. Im considering upgrading to a 4MB line now after only 1 day with a 384k Line

why me, I am just a luser.. ok let me make a stab. If you still where dl from the ps3 shop in the morning, chances are no disconnect, that would leave slow internet, nothing you can do about that, or lastly your system has some type of sleep mode, ie to save battery power, if a laptop, or a screensaver that turn all pc active down to the lowest possible.

Check in control panel|power options for these types of things. and also set your screensaver to none.

Blended Usage for March
Uploaded 10.9734 MB
Downloaded 339.4854 MB
Combined Total 350.4588 MB
TopUp Purchased for March 0 GB

Doubt it restarted, otherwise i would see on the usage tracker. i update the PS3 firmware yesterday also via the PS3 and it was around 120MB and was done in about an hour. so im not sure what happenin. At 7 this morning, my total usage was around 250mb

You've reached the end of my ideas. I am quite disappointed in the PS3 if it does not even resume downloads properly.

Sorry, i meant can i check on my router if i had been disconnected through the nite. there's no laptop or pc involved. Im using the Mega 105wr wireless router and the PS3 connects to that via WIFI network. so unless the PS3 has some sort of standby system which i havent seen before, i doubt its the problem. But thanks dude

Just checked, the PS3 does have a resume download feature, incase of disconnections or load shedding. So it may have disconnected sometime through the nite. And i wouldnt see much change on my usage tracker. Just need to figure out how to check for disconnections

My brother was also telling me about slow ps3 download speeds. He was trying to download the firmware on a 4 meg line but it still went slow for him. He was connecting the ps3 wirelessly to his router and the ps3 has NAT type 2.

Is there a way to make the ps3 download faster? An idea was to get an ethernet cable to link the ps3 to the router. Would that solve the problem?

Your download will be as fast as the weakest link to the server you are downloading from. IE if the PS3 site if slow, in the states it will be slow no matter how fast your local connection is.

Based on what you have said, I think your connection is normal for a 384k line.....perhaps you could do a liitle faster. Try doing a local speed test like at the iburst web site to give you a better idea.....international speed tests are too erratic and really cannot be used to determine if you are getting the right speeds

Unless the WiFi link is unstable to begin with, a LAN connection won't change a thing.

Lol....Shot dude...

Issue is resolved. When i got home yesterday at about 3:30pm, my download was sitting on 86MB. Bear in mind, that it had been running since 9pm the previous nite. So, i paused the DL on the PS3, then rebooted the router. Resumed the DL and it start doing about 1MB in less than a minute. Took about 5 hours to complete. Not sure why it needed a reboot. not sure, why i didnt try this sooner...

Thanks for the link. Im guessing that this is better than the Telkom Speed test?
