Ok, I ordered a 192kb/s ADSL account from Telkom, but I've just gone into my Router Stats and it's showing a downstream speed of 320kb/s and an upstream spead of 192...but the fastest I've ever downloaded a file is 20KB/s which is 192...whats up?

your download speed is determined by the server you are connected to and not the bandwidth by your provider. what are you trying to do?

The man is obviously little confused by the all situation:D

The confusion lies in the fact that the line should be 192kbps down and 64kbps up

Every download I've done from multiple sources, both local and international have never been more than 20.6kb/s which would indicate that the line is a 192kbps line

BUT

My upload speeds are consistantly above 14kb/s, and my router is reporting that the line has a speed of 320kbps down / 192kbps up

So I'm just asking whether this is the norm for the router to report a faster speed than the line "should" be and telkom limit the transfer speeds further along in the network

Your router will report 320kbps down and 192kbps up if you're connected to ADSL. This is no indication of the speed Telkom has you on. They determine that speed (speaking under correction) at the DSLAM at the exchange.

So if you're on 512k, your modem would still report 320/192 and your speed will be 512kbps.

Doesn't matter really

And I can also verify that upload speeds are usually equal or below the 192k mark. So HomeDSL 192 is down and up 192 it SEEMS.

ok all of these posts should be removed ;-) we dont want telkom to read and finally kill our luxury.

PS Telkom. None of us get more than assigned upload speed, these guys are lying to us. They must be high and dont have a clue what they talking about. Im only getting 5k upload speed, yes. Thanks

Too late since yesterday my upload speed is down a lot from a average of 300kbps to 80kbps now see what you have done.

HaHa Telkom read something other than a balance sheet? Nice 1

I used to know where to look for the line quality/speed but have since changed routers to a SMC - anyone know where to find that info on their interface?

EDIT - DUH - never mind - found it!

Thats whack, in the uk your modem almost always reports a speed simuler to the service you are on when your connected to 512kbit it says 522kbit or something simuler if your on 256kbit modem will report 266kbit and 1mbit it reports 1066kbit or something like that.

My router also reports 320 up/192 down. The irritating thing is it's not showing me what mode I'm in (interleaved or fast). My pings in CS are 80+, so I'm guessing I'm still stuck in interleaved mode :(

Speeds are around 20kB though...

on 384k and 512k lines you connect at 640kbps down and 384kbps up.
