Sorry if there has already been a thread about this...

I just spoke to a Telkom technician in my area, and he has confirmed that the new MSAN right outside my house is activated and ready to give me 40mb internet...

I just checked the sync rates on my router, and it all checks out, but while I was checking, I noticed that my line is now syncing at 8192 d/l and 512 u/l. I do have 10mb line rental with telkom, so I just wanted to check, with these new MSAN upgrades, should I be syncing at the full 10mb speeds, or still 8mb speeds? I thought I would be getting the max speed out of my line as I'm literally not even 15 meters away from the MSAN, and the MSAN can do 40mb...

Any help or advice is appreciated! :D

They must have made a mistake when initially installing your line and setting it to 8 meg, phone telkom and explain that you pay for a 10 meg but you are set to 8meg.

Ask to speak to a specialist or technician, just not the regular help desk personal.

Also check your router is set to ADSL2+ and not G.DMT

Post your line attenuation and SNR stats

Lol, I try to avoid Telkom like the plague... do you happen to know a phone number, besides for 10210?

Just call the call centre and ask them to put you on a 10mbps profile - its still at 8mb probably because you couldn't get your full 10mb before the MSAN and Telkom haven't changed you to 10mbps as its a manual process. It more or less instant you just need to reboot your router after the change.

Nah, I think they do it on purpose.

I had a 10Mbps request for DSL on a 40Mbps MSAN, and they set my profile on 4/10. I got the lesser.
A five minute call to 10210 fixed this.

^do this use the exact words "profile"

Thanks for the help guys! Just took the plunge and called Telkom, I just have to re-start my router when I get home... I will post results later ;)

Yes they do for good reason - because if you understand how DSL works then it makes sense. Would you rather have a slightly slower line or a unstable line? It also makes sense from a Telkom point of view less calls about faults. Most areas don't have MSAN still so there are still loads of 10mbps users that only get 6/7/8/9mbps attainable sync speeds. Some ISPs have Apps that allow you to change your sync speeds and reset ports without calling the call centre.

I do very much doubt that if you where on a 10mbps profile then Telkom installs a MSAN then decreases you to 8mbps or lower - that I doubt will happen on purpose.

Ja they had you on the wrong profile it seems.

ADSL2+ is not required for 10meg, ADSL2+ is for speeds upto 24Meg, ADSL2 is the profile you want for 10meg not 2+.

Telkom provides two ADSL modulations - G.DMT and 2+.
G.DMT is good for up to 8mbps.
2+ is used for higher speeds than that.

is this in theory?....as I pay for a 10Mbps line, only get 6Mbps...rock solid connection on modulation 2+...if I ask for anything higher, I get a pretty crappy 8Mbps on G.DMT...no one at call centre level can explain to me, why 2+ modulation can not be retained if they bump up my speed.

Cos they're doing something wrong, I reckon.

Might be because syncing with ADSL2+ results in somewhat higher line attenuation compared to G.Dmt, at a given sync speed. In your case connecting using G.Dmt at 8Mbps is barely stable and might not be possible at 8Mbps using ADSL2+ because of high line attenuation.
