ADSL tips

Hi all. After 3 weeks of problems with telkom, my adsl line is up and running. (telkom isp aswell).

Some newbie questions:

• where do i check my bandwidth usage?
• how do i go about doing a noise test on the line?
• any tips/tricks to get the most out of my connection? (read something about dns settings etc?)

I check on the telkom website there is a link for usage tracker and speedtest - which username/password do i enter there or do i need to register or something first?

All help would be much appreciated.

Hi,

Just go to www.telkomsa.net and on the left is a usage tracker

Your username and password is what they gave you to put into the router (not your email one) and is usually [email protected]

Noise test is performed when you log into your router (default 10.0.0.2) in your Internet browser of choice) and depending on what router you have, you can find it usually under "system status" or related WAN status areas of the router

DNS settings I dont know about since I dont give my business to Telkom if I dont need to

Enter the exact same details as telkom provided it to you, there's an example right below.

I'm not sure about a noise test, I wouldn't worry to much about it if I were you, some routers love noise, others hate it, it depends.

Getting the most out of your connection: Use the www.opendns.com servers if you have trouble accessing sites, which could be always, or rarely, I prefer to use the default DNS servers which telkom gives (you automatically connect to them), because they are local and therefore are faster.

Speedtest is testing your line speed, you can do it from here as well:

Remember to change your default password on your router, always do this, regardless of who tells you otherwise.

I got the new Mega 200WR router from Telkom. Will check my line speed when i get home.

i was a bit worried about the noise on the line as before i even got the adsl there was so much noise on the line that sometimes you struggle to hear the other person in a normal telephone conversation. i think its our house cabling.still have the old plugs with convertions - i played around with those a bit and got most of the noise out.
