So next month I'm upgrading my line to 20Mb. Pretty sure, once the upgrade goes through, it'll mean 20Mb over ADSL, not VDSL.

When that happens, what is the procedure to get it switched over to VDSL?

I'm not 100% sure VDSL is available in my area, but going to give it a try anyway. It appears only half my suburb is actually covered by VDSL, but although the coverage map shows, I'm not covered, it says that I am.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

You make sure your modem supports it, you go on the Telkom site and you find the online chat support and you tell them you're on 20Mbps ADSL and you want them to change it to 20Mbps VDSL.

Modem definitely supports it.

Does my line have to be with Telkom in order to do that? Or do I have to contact the ISP I have the line with?

The ISP, it's not a big thing, I asked them to change mine, it changed to a 15Mbps temporary sync and 30 or so minutes later the connection dropped, I restarted my modem and that was that.

Try this *1# on the phone line if you get a reply "sorry" something??? cannot remember right.... now then you are on a msan/isman port, it just matters what type of port you are on as the port has to be reconfigured to vdsl, then you need to change your modem settings to vdsl.

I recently upgraded from ADSL and VDSL and it's not that easy if the person on the other side of the phone doesn't know the difference between ATM and PTM modulations...
First you have to check if your area supports VDSL: https://secure.telkom.co.za/today/ucm/

Then after the upgrade, you need to ask your ISP to contact Telkom to change the modulation from ADSL2PLUS(ATM) to VDSL(PTM), otherwise you will just be upgraded to 20MB ADSL that is 20MB Down and 1MB Up. For VDSL your Down will also be 20MB, but your upload will be 5MB (Telkom recently upgraded the upload speed for VDSL).

Once your line modulation is changed from ADSL2PLUS to VDSL your connection will drop then you will have to update your router to VDSL setting.
I know I had to update my VLAN ID to 835 as well.
Depends on what Router you have, you can just reset your router then do quick setup, it will automatically pick up the VDSL setting, well that is what my Asus router did.

Hope you get sorted soon!
