To all who might have something to say.

I am seeking some honest information in regard to ADSL Uncapped that I have seen some ISP's offering at the moment.

What I believe and have heard so far is that it is on a UUNET backbone that this is okay for browsing and e mail not for gaming and that sometimes your download speeds could be cut to almost standard dial up speed.

Is uncapped something worth considering or not or is best to stay with capped on the Saix's backbone which I believe is more relaible in regard to speed.

Any help or input would be much appreciated.

What has been some other users experience.

Regards and thank you

The uncapped solutions ate on the IS backbone and I don't know about the speeds going down? If I had the bucks I would go for the uncapped solution. It is a shaped option, but gaming should still be possible since my shaped account (capped) works.

Permanent broadband, Internet connectivity – UNCAPPED local and international bandwidth with static IP

The Business ADSL Uncapped Static IP solution provides a router that connects to the ADSL line and has 4 LAN Ethernet ports. Static IP addresses are routed through the SAIX ADSL network down to the router on the customer’s premises (CPE) that allows 5 available static IP addresses to be used on the network.

Thank you so much for advise.

I see that there are some ISP's that are offering uncapped that uses your current router with a dynamic IP address there is not setup fee. Your suggestion is to have a static IP address with a special rooter installed and a hefty setup fee.

Are you able to advise which is more suitable and why.

Many thanks

I can speak only for what I have, which is an uncapped package from IS. I don't "game" so I can't speak for that.

They provide a very nice little Cisco router with 5 ( 4 usable ) fixed IP addresses. I download a lot using HTTP and the line runs pretty much to full capacity most of the time when in use, except for some of the busy "business" hours in the day where it maybe loses a quarter of its speed. I pull about 60-70Gb a month, and there are no questions asked. The static IPs can be used to run server applications if one so wishes. The one downside is that they do not provide SMTP, so I do run one "server" app, being a free mailserver, to provide this functionality. IS does have occasional downtime ( when it storms in JHB! ), but so do the others ( SAIX and Verizon/Uunet ). I have more problems with Telkom ( line losing sync ) than with IS.

I am very happy with the setup.

Uncapped UUNET?

I had a UUNET (Now Verizon) account and found it to be far superior to anything else I have tested. I have also heard that UUNET (Now Verizon) are no longer offering uncapped. AFAIK IS are the only uncapped SP out there? The UUNET uncapped accounts that are still out there are the older UUNET accounts and don't perform like the new ones.

I cant comment on the new verizon accounts but I have an older uncapped uunet one and its pretty horrible.

They're all being closed down in the next few months (so verizon can push their unshaped capped accounts?). Of course with the shaping becoming moot perhaps they'll reduce their prices.
