Hi all,

I'm totally exasperated, and I hope some of you can help.

About a month ago, I get a call from Telkom telling me that I can take advantage of some opportunity where they will put me on a DO3 package, so my monthly subs (line+ISP) will stay the same, and my speed will go from 512 to 4096. Great, I say, sign me up.

I keep monitoring the line, 2 weeks go by, and nothing happens. I call 375375 and eventually get through to some person who first didn't know what I was talking about, then sort of understood and checked and told me that my exchange doesn't support 4096 (I live in Lonehill, Sandton, BTW). She said that she would put in a request to upgrade the cables (!!!) and that it will take about a week. At this point I must say that my attenuation has always been high (~57) but I have NEVER had problems on my 512 line, and decent speeds (~50kB/s on torrents).

I wait a week, I wait another week, and nothing happens. At that point I sent my wife to the TelkomDirect shop in Fourways to check things out, since I've always had better results with them than the phone support people. She spoke to a guy called Patrick, and he actually checked on the system and saw that the exchange (line) can support 4096, so he upped the speed.

Ever since then, my line has been borked. I manage to sync for a minute or two, never at 4096, sometimes just over 2048, sometimes over 3Mb, but the connection lasts for only a few minutes, then the sync light starts flashing and the process repeats.

I thought that the guy saw wrongly that the line can support 4096, so I went to TelkomDirect yesterday, asked him to show me on the system, at it does say that my line does support it.

What to do from here? As an aside, if my line moves up to 4096, does my account need to move up too? At the moment my username is something like [email protected] which leads me to believe that it is a specific 512 account.

I'd appreciate any suggestions you may have.

My account is also dsl512 and I've got a decent 4096 sync, even when there was bad weather.

Which router do you use?

Also, it may be that your line doesn't fully support 4096, bad cabling or something. You could go to the telkom shop again or phone 0800 375 375 and ask them to sync your line @ 3mbps, since you say it syncs fine at that speed.

Being too far from the exchange is also a factor.

Do you get 4Mb speeds on your 512 account?

Anyway, my line doesn't sync fine at 3Mb - it syncs for a few minutes and then drops off. It looks like I may have to go back to 512 or have a long battle with Telkom to replace cables, improve them or what not.

I have a 100WR2 router. How do I find out where the exchange is? I know that there is a distribution box very close to my house, but I don't know where the exchange is.

To tell you the truth, I don't quite know how to work out how far you are from the exchange, I remember Yotch (member on the forum) posts and he helps to work out how far people are.

It's not a 512 account, it's just an ISP account, so if your line supports 4mbps then you get 4mbps.

A small tip I'd like to give you, do you know how to setup your router in Bridge mode and create a PPPOE dialup connection?

You choose bridge mode in your router and save the configuration, you will be disconnected. Then you go into your network settings and create a new broadband connections with the network wizard.

You enter your telkom account details and password and connect.

Before connecting, switch your router off for about 15 minutes, switch it back on and try to connect, try a few times, (it won't help trying if the router isn't synced) so be patient until it syncs.

After you connected with the dialup connection, browse a bit and disconnect, access the router and put it in PPPOE LLC mode again, like you normally used it.

Connect and see if it works.

Yes, I know how to switch to bridge, but what difference would that make?

Haha - you work for Nike or what?

I'll try it though - at this stage I am desperate.

hehe. I can't find my post about it, but I couldn't connect at all when I just got 4mbps, that's what I did (read it in another post) and it worked. It's not 100% though, so just try it.

Update - things still not working, I tried the bridged connection and it doesn't help.

I have spoken to Telkom again - they say that the line is fine

Does anyone know where the Lonehill exchange is?

I think I should go back to 512...sadly. It is really frustrating, I can't work from home and I am wasting a lot of time going back and forth to/from the office.

Does anyone have any ideas how possible is it to get Telkom to do something about the DS attenuation I have? I am sure that this is the problem.
