I called Telkom today to upgrade from 384 to 4/10mbps.

How long does this usually take? They said 2-3 working days, but I'm curious as to whether that actuallly happens.

I have checked telkom's website and broadbandstats, both of them report that my exchange (Langenhoven Park, Bloemfontein) supports 10mbps, what are the chances that I'll actually get that speed?

And also, my router reports the following:

ADSL
Type Interleave Path
Status Show Time
Downstream Upstream
Data Rate (kbps) 18393 1019
Noise Margin (dB) 11.0 10.5
Attenuation (dB) 14.6 5.9
Output power(dbm) 16.3 9.9

Does that mean that my line supports 18393 kbps download speed? Is there a chance that I'll get that speed when they trial 20mbps?

Are you sure that the router reported 18393 data rate, and not as an attainable data rate?

With those stats, you should be able to get like 16Mbps easy if Telkom supports it of course.

It takes 2 to 3 minutes. They do it while you're on the phone with them. Reboot router and you're good to go.

AFAIK no Free State (or Eastern Cape) exchange is part of the 20Mbps pilot project. First one will only commence after March 2012.

Must be.

But yeah, with those stats you should easliy get 10mbps, thats a hefty step up from 384k! Nice :D

I don't see "attainable" anywhere.

The guy on the phone said they need to do something at the exchange. Maybe its a specific issue. But I'm glad to hear it's usually fast, I thought it might take more like a month.

Grouter is correct... normally a few minutes and its done. Looks like you are going to fly - 384 to 10Mbps is a big difference!

Yay!
