Hi, i am getting an adsl line at home and looking at streaming Netflix/Hulu

What is the minimum speed adsl line i would need, and which ISP and account should i get

Thanks

I was previously streaming both on a Telkom 2mb uncapped account without issues.
4mb works even better.
2mb - DVD quality
4mb - HD

You only need 2Meg for decent netflix.

If two people watch at the same time though, rather get 4Meg.

Welcome! Last year sometime I tested at my home streaming netflix/hulu and monitored the bandwidth used on my router, playing 720p resulted in about 3,5mbps and playing 1080p was about 8mpbs.(no buffering) This was with 2 channel audio only. Surround sound audio will use more bandwidth.

If you are happy with 720p 2 channel audio a 4mbps line will suffice, just remember if anything else starts downloading while you are streaming it will start to buffer.

People seem to be happy with Telkoms ISP division. I myself use Mweb premium uncapped, many people complained they were throttled by Mweb but I suspect they were on basic accounts and downloaded 500 gig to 1 terrabyte

Try find an ISP with the least strict user policies and you should be good. Im sure if you only use the line for normal internet use and streaming, the data usage shouldn't be as hefty to the point of throtteling.

thanks, i will start on 2mb uncapped from Afrihost , and up it if i need to, I dont need 720p ..dvd quality ok for now

That sounds spot on.

From NetFlixes support site:

0.5 Megabits per second - Required broadband connection speed
1.5 Megabits per second - Recommended broadband connection speed
3.0 Megabits per second - Recommended for DVD quality
5.0 Megabits per second - Recommended for HD quality
7.0 Megabits per second - Recommended for Super HD quality
12 Megabits per second - Recommended for 3D quality

When I told some friends that I was keen to give it a go, the first thing they told me was that 2meg is too slow.

So I'm quite glad to see people reporting that 2 meg is OK :D

It could be due to the issues Telkom are currently having in certain parts of the country.
2mb used to be fine for netflix.

I have a 2 Meg line and get Netflix in 480p (DVD quality) with Dolby Digitial Plus on my PS3 after about 2min's of steaming.

480p with DD5.1 needs minimum 1.3Mb/s. 720p with DD5.1 needs minimum 3Mb/s.

yeah it could be telkom problems, I am not downloading anything at the same time as streaming. If i stream off the laptop its fine..

I think the PS3 App isnt switching down video quality so obviously buffers..will have to see

i upgraded to the 4mb line...works very nice..just seems in the early evening it is stuttering quite a bit..I think telkom congestion or something!
