Hi all,

Forgive me if I have posted an already hacked to death topic.. but here are my ramblings. I was comparing Dialup vs ADSL - as a 3 gig 512 original subscriber I was contemplating if dialup was far cheaper and effective.. The figures are not exact but its gets my point across

3 Gig ISP connect - ~R220
ADSL Line Rental - ~R400

Which means R620 I can only get 3 Gigs of data...

Now dialup

Line Rental - R80
ISP - R80
R7InfinitiCall - R50

InfinitiCall charges for 4 48Hr download sessions = R28
Average download speed on a 56K = 4K/sec
4096 * 60 (seconds) = 245,760 Bytes/Minute
245,760 * 60(minutes in a hour) = 14,745,600 Bytes/Hour
14,745,600 * 48 (hours/weekend on infinitiCall) = 707,788,800 Bytes/Weekend
707,788,800 * 4 (4 Weekends per month) = 2,831,155,200

2.8Gig per Month using the weekends ALONE at a cost of ~R238

Yes, it is Slow, but it looks like Telkom based their ADSL pricing to the land-line structures.

.......... food for thought ......

Sure - looking at it from a cost point of view only. However, there are other "hidden" benefits in having adsl and which can not so easily be measured in financial terms. I am a home user only. My kids can do research for their school projects in the afternoon instead of having to wait until 7pm (or me getting billed at R24+/h in the afternoon), I can read my newspapers, emails and other websites when I get home instead of having to wait until after 7pm etc. Even though the cost and usage restrictions of adsl sucks, I have peace of mind in the sence that I know what I am going to pay at the end of the month. And yes - I also download (or try to) as much as I need - up to 15Gigpm if you plan it right.

Depending on the needs of each individual, the cost factor may not be the only factor taken into account when deciding to go the adsl route. This however does not mean that I am happy with the current state of adsl affairs - hopefully it will get better soon.........................................

ummm well not really

adsl is 250 think plus 350 plus 80 r 680.00 for 30 gigs

dial up is slower than 2 90 year olds doin you know what

calls could end of coming to more than that alone

so 192 adsl is way better
dial your lucky to get 6 k a second adsl you will get 18 and higher

+ dailup disconnects ALL the time, lots of people dont get over 2kB/s on dailup. Painfully slow...
I got dsl 192, extremely happy. Is a bit pricey for 192 though. I got WA 30gB for R199 ATM,:) wish it wasnt ending

LOL! :-) I am a ADSL subscriber, will never go back to dialup. I was merely comparing Two products Telkom has ;-)

Isdn

When I became aware of Hellkom's reduced rentals and started looking at My ADSL I could not wait to get 192K ADSL. At present I have 64k ISDN.

I have put the whole plan on hold as ISDN is very stable, my normal download is at about 7,5kbps and seldom goes much below that. On a good weekend I can easliy get 1,25 gigs up and down.

For me it is much cheaper than going ADSL at present and unless November brings good news - which based on all the readings I have seen here - it is not going to happen, so ISDN here I stay.

If I want better speeds I could go 128K ISDN which would still be much cheaper than the proposed rates for ADSL

Yes I would love to have access to the net etc 24/7, but not at some rip off price.

well, I used to get 800 - 900 megs on average, from friday evenings 7.03pm to
monday am 6.45.. but I was doing http stuff mostly - anyone have feedback on how
torrents and DC++ behave these days on dialup?

Its a horrifying thought, but should push come to shove, I'd be happy to going back to giving Telkom around 500bux a month of my money at most, and putting the other R1 -R2000+ rand they would like me to pay them, for bullsh^t DSL, towards more useful things.

Maybe that's what they want to achieve - drive all the normal standard users
off the pipe (or make them pay so much, they're demonstrating a tactically
bad willingness to p^ss away money to get that internet service.)

I used to make do with evenings and overnight downloads, and weekend downloads, and bitch about phonebills of R400-R500. Looking at where things are now, and doing a reality check - going back to dialup - especially if prices do increase, would actually save me some money.

An analogy if ADSL is capped further, and extra gigs are priced to some
stupid degree - It's insanity to buy a Porsche, pay for it each month, and
only be allowed to move up and down in the driveway.

I'd rather switch to a Volksie and know that the ripping-off is minimal.

It's all about how you want to use it in the end. If you're looking at dial up, then start by dropping your ADSL to 192, you'll save R200, change providers to get a bigger cap cheaper, or pay less for 3Gb.

You can bring ADSL down to about R440 per month if you look around. That's why I did it. You also can't compare convenience. My wife can call family in Europe during the day for cents on Skype. And if I want something on the net, I can flip open a notebook and hop on without having to scrounge around for a phone line.

I'm an ardent Battlefield 2 Player and one thing is for sure this baby is bandwidth hungry, the game alone eats up ±50megs p/h, you simply can not play it on a 56k dialup and 128K ISDN barely makes the mark !!!!

If Telkom with their ridiculous pricing structures goes forward I WILL disconnect my ADSL and Phone line and go back to just using Internet at work and my Cell for other calls and playing single player games and the LAN every now and again... I for one can not afford their ridiculous prices if that is what they plan according to LaRoosta and I support him all the way.

Best of all now is that my GF also joined in the fun as I have a 512k line so its eating up double what it used to 100mg P/H !!!!!! and then......... !!!!!!!
