Can anyone please advise me. We're moving to JBay end of next month. Upto now we've lived on a farm in the NC where basically our only option for internet has been MTN wireless data contract. i do not have to spell out how expensive that is. 1st of all dstv has been on us to upgrade our old pvr, and seems like now's a good time as any to think about that.
Also I'm into photography, uploading pics and following other photographers on social media uses up a LOT of data. I'm looking for some advice- adsl or fibre. Fibre beinga rather expensive option, but still. Also capped vs Uncapped. I always thought uncapped' but just read an article in Popualr Mechanics that has me thinking twice.
Oh and service provider recomendations will also be wellcome.

I'd suggest first finding out exactly what's available where you will be staying in Jbay,
My mom is lucky that she has a new Telkom box around the corner from her and as such have 10Mbps ADSL. (Kabeljous).

don't think fibre is available in JB though.

After the inevitable name change to EasternCapeGirl, I think you will find fibre rollout in our province is really slow. ADSL is probably your best bet, but go for a god business uncapped if you need the bandwidth and can afford it.

Read a bit on the various ISP feedback threads to see if the general consensus is that they are good or not. I am using Telkom LTE in PE so cannot advise on what ISP to go for, per se

Best of luck

Fibre is more difficult to answer than ADSL. With ADSL your only provider is Telkom, and on ADSL, Capped is the best option.

However, on Fibre, depending on your provider and ISP, uncapped actually becomes a viable option, as with my fibre line, being uncapped and unshaped it makes a huge difference. My fibre is also cheaper than what I would pay monthly for a similar adsl package, meaning it is not that expensive.

In JBay, your only option will probably be Telkom(or rather Openserve, which is not independent from Telkom, but still part of telkom), which means it will be expensive firstly, and secondly, don't go with Uncapped, as the same problems that persist on ADSL is on their fibre, and thus you will feel the shaping of the data badly.

Thanks guys, I noticed ISPs aren't exactly plenty in the JBay area yet. Seems to basically be Telkom or a company called IGen. Don't know if anyone here knows anything about them? I guess the easiest willl be to walk into both their stores and have a chat, see what each can offer me.

And yeah Wabbit I will definetely have to change my UN. NorthernCapeGirl no more. Soon. Very soon.

iGen is here around the corner from where I stay in Newton Park, I am sure you could just go to them and enquire. I know I sometimes see a back haul wireless belonging to iGen link pop up on my phone when I am out visiting the folks near Grahamstown, so they do work quite far out.

Best of luck

On a serious note you can only get ADSL in JBay and your line speed will be very dependant on how far you are from the exchange.

No VDSL, no fibre.

Go here and insert your new address to see the options available: https://secure.telkom.co.za/today/ucm/

You can obviously look at wireless solutions, but most of them use Telkom's backbone anyway.
