ADSL vs Fibre

So we currently have a 4mbps ADSL line from telkom and our ISP is Mweb.

I was just wondering if it would be a good idea to move from the 4mbps adsl to a 2mbps fibre connection from Neotel.

There is already a fibre line from neotel running into our building so installation should be minimal.
 
You will be much happier as you will have lower contention ratio on the line and have symmetrical upload and download.
Recently changed over from bonded 10meg solution with mweb to 4meg fibre. happy as can be. will be looking at upping the speed very soon.

Yes they are, and they are allot more expensive. Just want to make sure it's actually going to be an improvement. We can always up the speed later I suppose, but at that point we could get 40mbps VDSL or 5mbps Fiber for the same prise.

but wont 40mbps vdsl be better? even if it run at a 1/4 of the speed it will still get 10mbps speed that dubble the speed of the 5mbps

so if it runs slow(as above) it will still be faster than the 5mbps

or do i see it wrong
 
It depends. What kind of services are you running and do you desperately need that extra upload bandwidth?

Sure your contention will be lower and your line will be more stable but the cost difference is huge - R769pm vs R3050pm.

i saw on afrihost's top 10 40mbps business
the #10 user used only 33gb :o

thats like almost R100 per gb

My experience with 20mbps compared to my previous 4mbps hasn't been too amazing. Speedtest wise I can get the full 20mbps, reality wise I only ever felt like I was on 20mbps when I was working from home the 1 day. So during those work hours I was logged in on my FNB account and it was flying. At the moment when I get home at night I'm currently on Afrihost and it feels no different than my 4mbps. Been actually having more problems with streaming YouTube lately. Although I think this might be a network/YouTube issue. It'll stream like balls but then you click download and it'll download at full 20mbps.

Most my http downloads are hitting that 20mbps speed though and the 2mbps upload has been nice, but it seems the browsing/streaming experience is going to be dependent on your ISP.
 
i had that problem in the past also
streaming 20-50kb/s on youtube then i download the vid with a downloader and it downloaded at max speed

still have it now and then :/
 
You can't compare ADSL/VDSL to fibre, two completely different mediums.
There is a reason why fibre is more expensive.
Yes, 10Mb/20Mb/40Mb ADSL/VDSL will obviously have a faster dl speed than a 5Mb fibre line, but upload will still be crap, and response times will still be crap. If you have a stable ADSL/VDSL line and are happy with the speed then no need to upgrade, but if you have issues then please do if you have the money.

We have 1000+ people/devices behind a 15Mb fibre line, and huge updates are done every day, youtube, vimeo etc are the top sites browsed per day, and no one ever complains about slow speed. As soon as I route some networks over a 10Mb adsl line they all complain about slow browsing etc.
We will be replacing the 10Mb ADSL line with a 100Mb fibre line, only R10 000 a month. Now that is dirt cheap for uncapped 100Mb fibre!

I want the 100Mbps fibre for R10K...where u getting that from ? I want it yesterday :-)

Cybersmart or RSAWeb, decided on RSAWeb, but no reason not to choose Cybersmart. International speedtests were between 80 and 95Mbps up and down, local all 100Mbps up and down

(Went to Cybersmart's offices in Town for the demo, was quite impressed with the speeds, hope RSAWeb will be the same)

I can only dream of that, not in the metro so for me 100Mbps costs like R95K a month...1:1 contention and all that but still not a realistic option :-(

Its very different, firstly they are different technologies. VDSL is just the next gen of ADSL, you keep your existing line, fiber is a new kind of connection... you need a new line.

Secondly, with fiber your upload speed is the same as your download and the contention ratio is much better.
