I had a cheap telkom router setup in my house which worked fine but the signal in my bedroom was really bad. I then bought the new Airport Extreme hoping it would solve my issue and while it is a little better its still not good.

The bedroom is literally 4m from the router, but there is a solid wall in-between. What are my options, I can't believe the signal isn't perfect for such a short distance.

Are you using the AE to extend the signal from your telkom router or in place of it?

Well the telkom router has the modem in it so its still connected and the AE is right next to it. I could technically run a cable from the telkom router into the bedroom and then have the AE there but wires are apparently the devil :(

*Edit - Re-reading your post I'm actually not sure how I set it up. My telkom router still provides a wifi signal, there are 2 wifi networks and both seem to work. I just end up connecting to the AE one though.

Options:
Wireless Repeater
Cable with a wireless access point * best option
Homeplug network over power with a Wifi AP/repeater * 2nd choice (no cables)

So the AE and telkom router are currently only connected via wifi? Have you tried relocating the AE to the other side of the wall?

Is it possible for me to have the AE on the other side of the wall connected wirelessly acting as an extender? Or would I need to still run a cable connecting it to the modem?

You can use the Airport extreme as a repeater/range extender, no cable needed. Also make sure that everything on your network is using the best wifi standard possible, a single 802.11g device can drag everything down to that standard.

Thanks for the replies guys. Will give that a try.

I went this route to get adequate WiFi coverage, 20m between APs. Not the cheapest or best option but cabling would have been a PITA.

Poor signal over 4m and one wall seems odd though, look for sources of interference (DECT phones etc), disable the D-Link WiFi and try changing the channel and repositioning the Airport Extreme if things don't improve.
