So, we are thinking about getting something at home again but want an uncapped service without a fixed term contract.

Please give your input as to what is available out there!

Wireless bad..

ADSL good..

The very way the ADSL market works is the bigger the ISP the better the service. No discredit to smaller players, but it's a numbers game.

So like McGuywer who promotes WA in his sig and Mweb his post, both would be a good choice :)

Hi there. I don't wana start a new thread, but also on the same boat as Margriet. I'm waiting for telkom line by my house. I'm looking for uncapped (30 gigs)monthly about with 1 meg line. I'm looking at Axxess, M-Web, and Webafrica? Can someone give advice please for me and Margriet. They say that 1 meg gives me 70/80kbps??? donwloading speed
Thanx

I have Mweb 1Mbps uncapped and I'm getting about 104-108kB/s depending on the type of downloads (NZB/HTTP).
With Mweb you can easily do 30GB/month on 1Mbps or even 384kbps connections.

1Mbps uncapped gives you a good balance between price and speed.

If you're going to do less than 25GB, with most of it between 7pm - 7am, then have a look at the WebAfrica Home Connect accounts: http://www.webafrica.co.za/home/adsl/connect/

Hi there. Thanx for reply. I had a wireless internet in my hometown, and could't download with "Fileserve, Rapidshare etc. Does M-web allow these downloads? I forgot to ask, I used to have ADSL about 5 years ago. Can I still use my Telkom router of those days?

I'm regularly downloading from those sites like Rapidshare/Megashare/Filesonic/Depositfiles and I max out my line with my 1Mbps Mweb Uncapped account. Every now and then I get that some of those downloads don't go beyond 20kB/s, but since I'm doing like 5 downloads simultaneously with jDownloader, I'm maxing out my line pretty much all the time that I'm downloading stuff.

If you're downloading series, then consider using SABnzbd+ & Sickbeard. Mweb's news servers are fine for download SDTV content during early morning hours.

Ca I use my old Router from 5 years ago (Telkom router) for my new connection coming?

You can usually use your existing ADSL modem, unless it is a business ADSL account that requires a L2TP VPN or something similar. In that case, the ISP would most likely provide you with a locked ADSL modem.

Hi Pada
Okay, let's say I want to donwload a 3 gig game tonight, en then a program or demo of 700 megs etc....will they drop my speed in those two days? How does m-web policy work. I was only allowed to download 400 meg a day with the wireless people I had joined. Now I want SPEED!!!!, just to enjoy things a little. Can you help here? Thanx

Mweb doesn't have a rolling window for shaping like Internet Solutions & Telkom, and perhaps some of the other uncapped ISP accounts have.
Mweb just shapes certain protocols, especially during the day. Mweb tries to give priority to games.

So to answer your question: Mweb will not throttle your speed due to previous downloads/usage.

HTTP & game downloads/updates would usually go quite fast.

If you're near Cape Town, then WebAfrica accounts are the best for gaming. Latency wise you cannot do any better, since WebAfrica hosts quite a number of games in Cape Town.
WebAfrica also hosts Steam content mirrors, which falls under their FreeZone, which is awesome since those downloads doesn't count against your normal cap. They also have a FTP server, which also falls in their FreeZone.

So far I've been very happy with my 1Mbps Mweb uncapped account in Stellenbosch, and so are my friends with 4Mbps Mweb uncapped accounts in Stellenbosch. Our latencies to the WebAfrica game servers from our Mweb accounts are pretty good too, but slightly higher (3-5ms) than when you use a WebAfrica account.
