After countless attempts at phoning telkom to see whats happening I have yet to find what I can do if anything regarding my line speed. My line was upgrading to a 10mb a few weeks ago and after finding out I ask my ISP to up my package to the 10mb. As of 01 November I should be on 10mb however I get max 4mb speeds. Telkom says my line is syncing at 10mb but according to my router (ADSL 2+) these are the results i get:

Downstream Upstream
Current Rate(Kbps) 4720 959
Max Rate(Kbps) 5168 960
Noise Margin(dB) 6.3 6.1
Attenuation(dB) 54 30
Output Power(dBm) 16.5 12.5

My line seems to only sync at 5mb but according to the broadband stats website my exchange is in sunninghill and is capable of 10mb.
Does anybody know what I can do to resolve this if possible. Both my neighbours get 10mb syncs on the router so I find at very strange that I only get 5mb :( Im busy paying for a 10mb for entire November when it looks like im still stuck on the 4mb

It has got nothing so much to do with your exchange as with your dslam. If your dslam is rated for only 4mb, that is all you will be able to get.

My personal example;
My router is syncing at 14000kbps - my dslam is limited to 4095. Therefore I can only get 4mb. It is as simple as that.

Phone Telkom and ask them what your dslam is rated at.

You're too far from the exchange (attenuation of 54dB). You're getting just about the theoretical max that you can. Also, with a noise margin of 6.3dB your line is not going to be very stable. Rather ask Telkom to put you on the 4Mbps profile.

Agreed.

@Rkootnir

Perhaps I should have posted my stats along with my post.

SnR - 28
Attenuation - 15

Telkom has also confirmed the hardware limitation of my dslam at 4mb speeds. Therefor even though my exchange CAN do 10mb, my dslam here is the limiting factor. My line is more than 10mb capable.

EDIT: I assume your answer was meant for the OP?

Yep, for OP. Your stats are very good - if your exchange were 10Mbps enabled you would actually get 10Mbps.

The OP on the other hand is on an exchange which probably supports 10Mbps, but he's too far from that exchange. He might also have a bad line, which a Telkom tech could probably sort out.

However, I think he's more in my position. My neighbours get 10Mbps easily but I can only get 2Mpbs on a 10Mbps line and that is purely because they are connected to a closer exchange than I am. Trying to get Telkom to move my line to the closer exchange has proven impossible so far...

You are correct. I completely misread his post and misunderstood his stats. My apologies.

I think I have a similair question. My line reports max speed of 4Mb, but my ADSL displays 10Mb capable. How do I find out what/when my exchange will be upgraded to 10Mb ? How do I confirm what my DSLAM is capable of ? I live in Ellisras (Limpopo), the fastest growing town in South Africa and a rural town (home of the massive Medupi power plant project). My ADSL line is about 100 meters from the exchange.

Can you also explain to me what is better: is a lower noise margin (dB), attenuation, better ? For example is noise dB 18 better than 22 ?

Here are my ADSL Stats:

Status Up
Total Time 1 hour 50 min 19 sec
Modulation Type ADSL_G.dmt
Standard Used G.992.1_Annex_A
Standards Supported G.992.1_Annex_A,T1.413i2,G.992.3_Annex_A,G.992.5_Annex_A
Link Encapsulation Used G.992.3_Annex_K_ATM,
Link Encapsulation Supported
Link Encapsulation Requested
Line Encoding DMT
Data Path L1
Interleave Depth
ATUR Vendor 414c4342
ATUR Country 181
ATUC Vendor 54535443
ATUC Country 181

Downstream Upstream
Current Rate(Kbps) 4096 512
Max Rate(Kbps) 10688 1052
Noise Margin(dB) 22.5 12
Attenuation(dB) 10 4
Output Power(dBm) 0.5 1.5

Now you see...you are in my boat it seems. Your stats are great. Also a higher SnR is better while a Attenuation is better when it's lower.

Easiest thing to do is call telkom's helpline and ask them what your dslam is capable off. Quick and simple.

Does the Telkom speed checker on their site provide the reading based off exchange or dslam? Reason I ask is because I am on a 2mb line and if I use the Telkom speed check service, it reports that my line can reach a maximum of 1mb (just sad). Though if I check the details of a house mere meters away from mine, I see that it lists their maximum speed potential at 10mb.

I can't understand why 2 houses in the same small road would have a 9mb line difference if it were exchanges. Also makes me worry that I will never see the light of anything better than 2mb.

Recently they had to move me onto a different dslam because the one I was on was faulty, the port I was connected to was causing my line to drop several times a day.

Max/Attainable rate != Sync rate

Sync Rate = Current Rate
