I don't quite get the difference between the two and thought they overlap at 20mbps.

Telkom guy kept referring to my VDSL 20mbps and I'm on a MSAN, but pretty sure the guy they installed said I was on ADSL2+.

Don't they have two different plugs into the modem?

Same plug into the modem. Very few modems support VDSL.

20Mbps VDSL is a lot faster than 20Mbps ADSL, I did some tests.

They usually install an ADSL profile, and then you have to get them to change it, it is like pulling teeth.

So the technician is probably right when he says it is ADSL.

Adsl2+ max is 24/1.8 . So your profile on adsl 2+ Would be 20/1.x but you can't forget the ~15% overheads.
Vdsl2 can go quite a bit higher speed but telkom limit it to 20/2, 40/3 even though vdsl2 can go 150/150 i think. Vdsl also has less overheads, you should be getting about 18-19mbps on a 20mbps profile, not to mention the higher upload.

The only issue with vdsl atm is that you have to use a telkom pace router, unless you order a vdsl router from oversees.

Oh, guy above post who said vdsl 20mbps a lot faster, no it isn't, but it has less overheads so you can get closer to the line speed, vdsl should not change your ping.
