Hi
When browsing local sites (ie news sites) you get diverted through this site/portal/thingy :D

What is the purpose of this divert? Hit info gathering for advertising of sorts.

I am sure it is not malicious by any means but it often results in pages not loading and hakking vas which is an irritation.
Sorry if it is a dumbass question, just curious so that I know who to curse at silently when it happens ;)

not sure what you mean by diverted...

it could be that you are browsing a site that has advertising (images) which is hosted on adsweb2.johncom.co.za. if you want to prevent your browser from downloading the ads, add the following to your hosts file:
127.0.0.1 adsweb2.johncom.co.za

You can find your hosts file (windows xp) in c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

or if you want a more permanent solution, get a (gentoo) linux box up with squid and adzapper! you will hardly ever see ads again (except on myadsl for some reason)!

It could also be a transparent proxy server. i hate it when an ISP do not provide you with a choice of using their proxy... nothing much you can do about that.
