ADT billing issues

So last year we have told the guys that we would like to cancel our account as we were moving out of our house.

We gave them December 2014 notice that we will be cancelliing their services. There was also a big hoo-haa about them not coming to collect their equipment as it was still theirs.

The installer phoned in April or May of this year to ask us whether he can come to collect their equipment, told them to arrange with the new homeowners.

From April until now there was no communication regarding any outstanding debts. Except for their equipment which they wanted to collect.

This morning my wife received an SMS :

Your ADT account has been handed to Debtsource (PTY) Ltd for collection. Please call us to make an urgent payment. Tel 011348xxxx and a reference number.

I'm not quite sure as to what to do...
 
Typical Saffrican issue.

Corporate cancellation process is furked up and now you have been handed over. Credit record impacted.

If you have proof of cancellation, seek out the highest level you can (CEO, MD, etc) and lay a formal complaint. Everything must be cleared, internal account, EDC and credit record with ITC/ Experian or whoever they use.

If you have written proof of cancellation and notice of their receipt, escalate it straight to the management of ADT and tell them that they have until the end of the day to resolve the issue. If they do list you, then dispute the listing and go public.
 
We had EXACTLY the same thing happen to my Mom and Dad.
Eventually we just kept sending a copy of the cancellation email to the person at Debtsource and eventually they stopped bothering us.
