Had a consultant come through to quote on a security system. Their home automation base system which consists of 3 passives, 1 indoor camera, 1 outdoor camera, a few door\window sensors and control panel. They're asking R20k for this basic setup and then R5k a pop for the outdoor wireless sensors (VISONIC*OUTDOOR*34TOWER-20AM*PG2).

Are there any good alternatives, the pricing seems a bit excessive. What it can do is pretty awesome but get the feeling they milking the novelty and newness of home automation?

Not to be funny... but i upgraded my alarm in my new house with ADT and it seemed expensive. I do suggest you shop around... ADT does charm a premium for their service + products.
I believe its over priced - at least for where I live - and i use a more localised security company.
I'll spare you the ADT bashing comments - but i do suggest that you get comparitive quotes for the installation as well as the monitoring... Your local Neighbourhood group on FB usually has some info on the good/bad/ugly of the area too.

Which area are you and what about that which you've listed is home automation?

I'm in JHB. It's the base system so with that you can remotely tap into your security system and activate\ deactivate the alarm. Then they sell you additional controllers etc. that can switch things on and all that jazz.

Will shop around but obviously looking for a larger company with a good track record and reputation. You obviously want quality products and services at a reasonable price. I'm in JHB btw.

Oh okay, I would agree that that sounds excessive. I'm in Cape Town and had a paradox system installed in the last year sp6000 series. For the controllers you also need an electrician and relay switches and of course the ip150 Internet module.

I'm with zonewatch though and they're quite pricey. Can give you comparative prices for items tomorrow afternoon if you'd like but there's a few places online that were cheaper than zonewatch. But all those details are at work unfortunately.
