Good afternoon everyone...

So we had two guys from Advanced Telecoms come and advertise their service at our offices recently in Cape Town. The quick meeting went well as they said that fiber is not the future and that LTE is the way forward in our area - believable to some and not so much to others.

Before they left, he did a quick LTE speed test on his phone (not sure on the ISP) but he got a respectable download and upload speed. I did the same test to the same server and got a worse result in terms of speed (due to the fact that we have a low line speed currently) - but the interesting part was that the ping was significantly better. It gets better as he then proceeded to argue that a higher ping of 46ms is better than a ping of 6ms to the same server....

Has anyone ever used their service or heard of them? I see their review on Google is not great (5 reviews isnt much, but with everyone complaining about it, its not looking all too good).

Any person, animal or robot telling you carrying signals over a shared space {Wifi, LTE or whatever} will be better than carrying signals inside a close space {a cable of some sort} is misinformed.

If you can get fibre, get it. You will be fine for a great many years.
If there is no fibre or other cable option, become religious and pray that whoever sell you "some over the air solution" {say LTE in this case} will work where you are. Then, keep praying that they do not sell this service to more clients for when they do you can be sure your service will degrade. The problem is, if they do not sell to more they cannot make a profit thus the infrastructure will not be maintained over time. Now you back where you started.

It is true that LTE and whatever other future wireless technologies will become more important as we will link every thing including bees gathering nectar.

More practical.
Simple to test how good a service is:
a. They will tell you all about speed. Speed have little meaning on its own. Ignore this for the most part.
b. Measure the latency, it takes seconds to spot the difference between a good cable vs some open carrier.
On any computer, ping say 8.8.8.8. {a super basic test: ping 8.8.8.8 -t}
Look at the change in response time. Zero change is ideal.
=> Naturally if the LTE is not used by many the change in response time will be low. Be assured, when many use the service it is not at all comparable to cable {say fibre}.

It gets better as he then proceeded to argue that a higher ping of 46ms is better than a ping of 6ms to the same server....

:D funny guy

Would have told them to GTFO and never come back the moment that came out of their mouths.
