Hi Guys,

Need some advice, looking at installing a wireless access point (4meg ADSL) in the office (separate from the office network) for unrestricted wireless access.

But I have a requirement to keep tabs on people, ie check usage and or limit setup a cap per MAC address. Also block inappropriate sites and protocols.

Anyone with experience with a similar setup? Looking for a router or device.

Thanks!

You can either go for a wireless router that runs DD-WRT/OpenWRT/Tomato or MikroTik RouterOS, and then make use of their Hotspot functionality.

Have a look at the TP-Link WR1043ND and at some of the MikroTik wireless routers.

Another nice router for running OpenWRT is the Buffalo WZR HP G300NH, has lots of flash and RAM (+GbE and USB).

The Buffalo router is quite expensive compared to the TP-Link equal, and it doesn't have MIMO (multiple in & multiple out) w.r.t. wireless like the TP-Link one has.
I have the Buffalo router and a friend of mine has the TP-Link, so I'd say that the TP-Link is the better choice, unless you're going to require more flash memory than what the TP-Link has to offer.

The WRT54GL is not discontinued as far as I know?... Great router, agreed... but a bit overpriced @ around R650. You can get a way more efficient mikrotik setup with that kinda money

The Linksys WRT54G series routers was truly awesome for their time, but now they're completely outdated and outranked by the newer routers like the TP-Link WR1043ND.

I prefer the use of MikroTik hardware above routers with DD-WRT firmware. The MikroTik RouterOS definitely has its drawbacks too: like it's OpenVPN support is poor and it doesn't have PPPoE Relaying/Passthrough.
The main reason why I prefer it is you can make changes to its settings and you don't have to restart the router to apply & save them.

Pada, do you know if you get a MikroTik router that supports ADSL(can not see it on their site) or should i use a standard Ethernet ADSL router and connect that to the MikroTik?

I can answer that one for you :) All Mikrotik routers can dial PPPoE connections, and then with proper NAT & routing you can set it up as a gateway. No mikrotik device has a built in ADSL modem, as far as I know. In other words any mikrotik router (with RouterOS) will work with any ADSL modem/router that can function in Bridged mode or has half-bridged (pppoe-relay / pppoe-passthrough) functionality. Be sure to change the MTU and MRU for the PPPoE connection from default 1480, to 1492
