A friend handed me his iPhone4 the other day to see if anything can be done wrt unlocking it. It's running 5.0.1.

Have there been any advances in unlocking?

Yes there is a new method which unlocks any iPhone 4 or 4s on any firmware. It uses SAM (subscriber artificial module) and fools the carrier into unlocking your phone.

Apparerently Apple cottoned on to this and started blocking it but there's still an opportunity for it to work:

Check iPhoneza forums for more help, those guys probably know it all.
It looks like theyve blocked it but thanks all the same.

You can always go the formal route and pay for it? I did read somewhere that they do it for a certain cash payment, if you want I can try and google it again.

I've read that ATT are unlocking out of contract iPhones so I'm going to give that a shot next.

I tried that, I got a hold of them on twitter. They took my EMEI number and after a week or so said that they could not unlock it due to the "history" of the device, I asked them to elaborate, but they didn't.

I might as well give it a shot - do you recall what the twitter handle was that you used?

It's most likely due to the fact that AT&T flagged the phone as a device that never connected regularly to their network prior to its purchase i.e. they derived no revenue, hence not willing to assist.
