My Netgear DG834GT is busy packing up and I need to get a replacement.

What be the best router to get now in terms of value for money and future proofing?

@SPY,

You need to elaborate a bit on your requirement....are you planning to stick with ADSL or are you considering 3G (is port forwarding a requirement)? Or perhaps ADSL with 3G fail-over support. Do you require 802.11n, b, g or Super G (as is the case with the Netgear DG834GT)? Then there is the Ethernet connectivity....will you require 10/100/1000 Mbps or only 10/100 Mbps? Will you require a router with USB port/s?

The cheapest ADSL + Wireless N router that I know of that works pretty well is the Planet ADN-4000 modem/router at R395 ex VAT.
Unfortunately the public can't buy directly from Scoop Distributions, and the modem doesn't have external antennas either.

The ADSL router + Wireless N combination that I suggest most of the time is the D-Link DSL-2500U ADSL modem (R300 or less at most shops - incl VAT), along with the TP-Link WR1043ND router (R589 ex VAT) which is a Gigabit router with USB and Wireless N, and you can install DD-WRT firmware on it!

I'm also using TP-Link but TP-LINK W8960N which is a modem router together and must say works great. Only 10/100 port speed. Bought mine from bidorbuy R.569 with VAT.
