Hi Guys,

I am a very junior developer looking for advice.

I am wanting to build a public website. And I am at a lost to what tools to use.
Cpanel Wordpress etc etc.

Hosting the website seems to be cheap enough, HostGator seems to be a decent choice for hosting.

Specs :

Register/Login capability.

Main page - Giant calendar ; Each date a summary of events that day. Clicking on the date brings up the day in a new window with all events, and ability to add new events.

Each event must be able to be commented on.

Also an email alert for events - such as an attending button for each user on the event and those users can receive email updates, and the creator of the event must be able to send out a mass email to these users.

Attached is a basic drawing of the main page.
EventCal.png

This to me seems like a very basic website, it is for people to add events to and other people to view them.
If anyone could give me some useful advice at where to start with this, I have started looking at wordpress but it seems to be more of a blog layout and not what I am looking for.

That is a very basic website. Don't use silly things like wordpress, cpanel, joomla etc.

Just build the website in HTML, CSS and JS and you're set. You're going to need a basic backend for the user and event tracking and mailing. So go for a RoR backend or integrate with a cloud database and a cloud mailing service

Honestly its going to be easiest for your to buy a premium wordpress theme that caters for your layout

Get a website host that use virtualmin, almost same as cpanel, but there is a script that you install, webcalendar, that will do everything you described.

Script: webcalendar.sourceforge.com

To everyone recommending the OP buy or install some open source software, perhaps the goal is to actually build it.

+1 to JStrike.

OP: If you're uncomfortable working with a lot of JS boilerplate, perhaps you can consider using JQuery.

Goodluck!

This seems like quite a match for what the OP wants.

Demo page here: http://webcalendar.sourceforge.net/demo/login.php?

If you want something prettier/more modern then probably just better off doing it yourself.

Thanks so much guys,

This is great feedback!

I am studying for exams which I write next week then I wanted to get on top of this little project.

Just to answer some questions.

My main language is Java,
I am torn with what to do with regards to building the site myself and using plugins and so on.

In one aspect I want the site to work off the bat, so that when I start to push people to use it, it doesn't break and so on, also the turn around time in creating it would be faster.

In the other aspect I believe building a 'successful' website would look great in my CV, I am out of practice but I believe that as it only has a simple back-end it is achievable at my level of experience.

I really do appreciate all the feedback, I haven't had a chance to look into the plugins for wordpress but the webcalander from virtualmin isn't pretty enough.

This website will be aimed at people who aren't 'internet-savy' and needs to be easy on the eyes and basic to navigate.
