Advice for employee .... any local forums out there?

Hi guys

A friend of mine is looking for guidance that I cannot offer on a labour matter. His company is withholding his salary because of money that the company says he owes them.

Can someone point me in a direction of a forum that he can ask his question before seeking costly legal counsel.

CCMA has a call center - free. They're just not always the most friendly, but they are knowledgeable.

Otherwise a labour lawyer for 1 hour isn't too much (R600.00 or so)

AFAIK the company can't withhold his entire salary but only a portion that is due to them and in writing of this money borrowed through them. For example, 10% repayment that's taken off his salary each month until the money has been paid back in full. When terminated (or leaving) they're entitled to recoup any outstanding amount that is owed to them entirely before paying his last month's salary (or deduct it off the severance pay if he was fired) before leaving.

If they're withholding his entire salary, take them to the CCMA as it's unlawful to do so, even with FICA/Debt Counselling
