Hi Folks
Travelling to Spain mid April this year.

Need some help from anyone that has been there.

Which mobile service providers would be best for me to use? Any packages I should opt for?

Will likely need data more than anything else - usually use a t mobile SIM in the USA and thats around $60 for 5gb for 30 days.

Anything similar in Spain?

Any other tips for anyone that has been? Sighs, cultural do's and donts?

Planning to do Barcelona, Madrid, Sevilla, Mallorca and Valencia.

Thank you

Enjoy, it's a beautiful country.

Try and learn some basic Spanish. How to ask for beer, etc. Surprisingly few people speak English there.

Used Vodafone prepaid "Tourist" package in Italy with zero problems, seems the Spanish have the same kind of deal :

You should be able to find this at certain airports, in Barcelona the advice seems to be to buy at Placa Catalunya.

Messugga's advice is good, learn some simple phrases - it makes a huge difference to the way people perceive you. Older people really do not appreciate being forced to speak English. Even if you just greet them in Spanish it would help.

Enjoy, wish it was me.

An alternative that I have started to use now is Forbesfone which is an "international" sim card and gives you virtually the same rates thoughout Europe. Saves you from buying new sim cards the whole time. I used it for a 6 week holiday in Europe last year and I spent about $60 in airtime using my phone the whole time as usual, except for app and firmware updates.

If haute cuisine is your thing then San Sebastian is the place to be

In fact, of the seven 3-Michelin star (the highest there is) restaurants in Spain, three are here in our city, home to another great selection of establishments holding a total of 16 Michelin stars where you can enjoy the excellent fare dished up by the city’s culinary artists. San Sebastián is [one of the cities in the world to hold the highest number of Michelin stars per square metre (only beaten by Kyoto in Japan, and well ahead of cities like Paris and Lyon).

Thanks for that. Won't be going that far North but wow! Those pictures make me realise I don't have enough time or money in my lifetime to see all these places.

San Sebastian may be a place to go back to.

Thank you

I usually work through around 4 GB a month. Given that we will be away, probably more so with all the FaceTime we will do with the kids.

Will check this out.

Shot for this tip. Will download a few podcasts to help.

If you are into art, Barcelona will be fantastic. I recommend the following:
Fundació Joan Miró – modern art, has a great rooftop
Picasso museum Barcelona
Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya – besides the art, the waterfall is spectacular

Go to the Barceloneta beach

Dont need to mention much else, there are many guides for Barcelona

Consider getting a knowroaming SIM sticker. You can get unlimited data for about $8 a day.
I bought mine off takealot, otherwise you can also buy them from the Apple stores.

They offer free whatsapp anywhere in the world as well. http://www.takealot.com/knowroaming-sticker/PLID34201110

If I didnt have this stuck to my SIM, I wouldn't have had contact with anyone in Reunion, as Vodacom doesnt have prepaid romaing agreements there.

Try fit in Andalusia and see the awesome Moorish influences in Granada as well as cuisine especially the abundance of seafoods on the Costa do sol
And yes the Spanish can speak English perfectly well but won't and don't
Side trip to Gibraltar is always fun
Up in the North ...Galicia is incredible but maps are rather dodgy
If you sinned a lot in this or other lifetimes a pilgrimage ...the Camino de Santiago might absolve you but will punish your feet.
Know that Madrid folk only start going out late and stay out til dawn and drink all and sundry under the table
It's a great diverse place particularly with the religious festivals in swing because apart from Mexico, there's nowhere quite like it
Castilian Spanish is the lingo that will set mortals apart
Beware of Russian mobsters and prositution in the South around Marbella which incidently houses the largest population of criminals on the lam outside of SA I suppose
