Greetings techie types,

This here Moose is heading to the big city of CT this coming weekend....

As a foreigner visiting your corrupt country for ten days, I wish to purchase one of those little sim cards for my IPAd so I can access the internet whilst visiting.

Now I have done this before, on a pay as you go, but it seem's that due to me not accessing the network after three months, because I returned to Namibia, the sim no longer works...

Questions:

1) where can I go in Canal Walk to purchase such card?
2) Can I buy such card?
3) What is the best value to buy? I cannot see myself using more than 1-2gb whilst in town.....
4) Last time, I had to produce my Namibian ID and a place of residence in the grand ol' Republic.... is this still a requirement?

In anticipation, I eagerly await with bated breath your professional response....

/Moose sit's back, stares at screen........

If you are in a hotel (or similar) a copy of your itinerary and your passport meet RICA requirements.

Should you be told otherwise, then ask to see the supervisor as some shop staff have never registered a SIM to a non-resident!!

In a guest house, on a tour, this is the perfect answer, thanx! I will take a copy of my passport with!

Thanks!

So around 12hoo, I went to the Telecom store at CapeGate, bought me the 2+1 gb data bundle for R149. I checked my emails twice, surfed five websites for less than an hour and downloaded nothing. Streamed nothing..... 9 hours later I get to,d that I have exceeded by bundle.... WTF? Impossible, I have not even gt near 100megs , let Alone 2gb, has this happened tomanyne else?

That sucks! Was the ipad not automatically updating your apps? There is an option in the settings for that.

The one thing I will give telkom is that I've found their bandwidth calculations to be pretty much accurate, so I'd look at things on your end first.

Are you sure that 2+1 was activated and that you were using Telkom's network and not roaming on MTN?

Roming on Mtn, I see that where I had a series of numbers on the top left corner at the sports courts, back at the guest house , there was no service and that changed to MTN SA.

I am still on Ios 6.1 and have no intention of updating..,,

There is just no way that I could have chewed up all that data in a few hours....i will see what it says when I get to the courts just now...

Ok! Solved that issue, thanks for the assistance.

I was on automatic carrier choice and on roaming, disabled both options and chose 655-02. 3g , can now surf so i am assuming that exceeded your bundle was a MTc thing...

On my ipad, how would I check how much data I have left?Is the a special pin?

Cheers

Morty on the Courts.

I think Telkom Mobile have an app on iTunes...

I've got a Samsung 10.1 which has a dialer so, USSD commands are not an issue. Apple were shortsighted in thinking no one would ever use their devices on pre-pay...

Here we go: http://www.telkommobile.co.za/pages/ipad/app/

JimM, spot on bru! Installed the app, went into it and lo and behold, I have only used 50megs out of the 2gigs and the nighttime 1gb has not even been touched....

Thanks, interesting app, piece of mind achieved!
