Advice needed: 40Gb Account(s)

Hi all.

With the rumoured impending demise of the Uunet/Verizon uncapped account, and the rumoured high prices they will be substituting, I am starting to look around ( rumours only, I know, but one must be prepared ). I would appreciate input and comments on the options I have found below ( or any others ). I know that people ask these sorts of questions frequently on the forums, but it is only when you come to look at your own needs that the confusion sets in.

I use about 40Gb a month minimum.

Are the caps promised by these suppliers real? ( IE: are they marketing only, and everything slows down soon )

Are the speeds OK? Service?

Most of my downloading is HTTP off an overseas news server, but could substitute NNTP if IS's news server is as good as people say here.

I am not too fussed about a once-off setup charge. I do not need P2P or gaming.

I would be prepared to pay up to R1500 for a decent service.

Option 1 - Openweb 10Gb 384 SAIX Single connection times 4

4 * R349 = R1396
Is this VAT inclusive or exclusive?

Option 2 - Dotco/AllYouCanEat 30Gb times 2

2 * R680 = R1360
Is this VAT inclusive or exclusive?
I assume this is SAIX.
20Gb over requirement which is nice.

Option 3 - NukeCap Uncapped IS

1 * R1000 = R1000
Is this VAT inclusive or exclusive?
Uncapped is nice.

Option 4 - Imagine Uncapped 384

1 * R890 excl VAT = R1015
What network do they use - they are quite vague on this account?
Can you pump international?

Option 5 - SAOL

I can't see the 30Gb service on their ADSL page. Have read BAD things about this service.

no way dude that prices are ridicules... the best option is to go to www.axxess.co.za I currently have a 30 gig cap there and it costs 349p/m if you wan't to get uncapped adsl i think u'll pay arround R649 p/m

and you get better download speeds wif them to and they are reliable with their capacity that they give once you are subscribed to them when sending a fax with ur details and account numbers it will take them 40 min or so to enable your connection then you are online.

but with telkom scum.. you have to wait even longer than 24hours well thats my past experiences.

btw when you subscribe to another isp like axxess and you own a telkom adsl line they meaning (telscum...) will still charge you R270 a month for their 3 gig cap even thou you are not logged on with their account so whatch out for that... sue them if they don't disable it or refused to pay it worked with me when I refused. :)
 
Thanks Aspersie. Their web site ( from the link in your post ) advertises 30GB at R1899. Have I missed something? They have also had bad press here for their support. I don't want to sign up with a fly-by-night and am prepared to pay what I said for a good service. Are they reliable and likely to be around a while?

Aspersie - where do you get R349 for 30gig on axxess - there is no shuch price on their website
- please explain.

if i remember correctly, i've heard people complain that their authentication tends to mysteriously fail towards the end of the month and you loose what you havent used...

If anybody can tell us good or bad things about axxess - please do so here - would love to know myself

sory guys i guess i was late with the details that i told you about.

so i did a litle research and found another site www.AYCE.co.za they have a 30 gig cap for R649 thats much better :P

btw when i were at axxess about 8 months ago I paid R349 p/m so looks like the monopoly twisted a few things since then

but wait till the end of 2006 then it will be over for sure and u'll see that telkoms going to see their asses because AT&T have already started with fibre optics in south africa and then we'll see what telkom's going to do about that...
 
and even maybe the selfone market will take over the internet lines of telkom

**Please note: Apart from SAOL/Openweb, I haven't had experiences with the other ISP's. However I haven't heard complains about the AYCE service. My comments won't include IS Uncapped or Imagine**

Yes, they are real and the maximum speeds remain constant

Yes. Openweb's service is superb, SAOL's shaky and I haven't heard any complaints about AYCE's service.

Pricing:

AYCE, SAOL, Openweb: Include VAT (don't know about IS + Imagine)

I would go with AUCE, all things considered.

Well it looks like the Openweb option has just got blown out of the water with a huge price increase :(

there is one thing i wanna know this 30 gig Cap Eat as much as u can can u still browse or use local when capped.

I'll rather wait till the end of 2006 then the monopoly with telkom will be over in the mean while i'm using my mtn prepaid package to connect atleast they don't rip you off
