A lady brought me a PC with a fault. She said that when she connected it to the mains it went 'bang, bang'. I suspected the power supply and replaced it with a new one. The PC started fine, Windows started but then everything died. The new power supply is now also dead. (damn).
My next plan is to test components (processor and ram) by swopping out on a known good setup. However, I am now concerned that the processor or ram may be faulty and that may damaged the currently good system.
What are the chances of this happening? or I am right in thinking that the fault is on the motherboard?

or all of the above, you'll have to test. My friends computer got damaged with all these brown outs we had recently. The computer booted, but was slow and didnt shut down properly. We had to replace the motherboard, processor and dvd writer, but everything else was fine.

Hmmm, never had that happen before. Normally when you slap in the new PSU and the board is still faulty it will just refuse to boot.

Have you checked the new PSU in another PC?

I dunno what to tell you... it is a risk that you take testing it in another system.

Check the jumper pins from the case to the motherboard... esp. the power switch pins are in the right place.

Our office workshop had problems with certain major supplier molex to sata power cables causing major power problems.

Sorry for this Captain Hindsight remark: I would suggest that you use a proper PSU next time that has short-circuit protection.

Other than that, look for blown capacitors on the motherboard. You can usually smell blown electronic components.

replace MB ... sounds like an issue there ... let us know how it goes

Edit: ... power supply to :}

Shtty luck there.

Take the entire setup out of the case & put it on a wooden table. Something is shorting out w/ case imo. If its not that then mobo is the next likely candidate.
