Hi

I am currently based in White River and using Telkom ISP for my ADSL. I use the connection a lot for overseas web work and gaming (Eve-Online). Due to the nature of the work and my gaming obviously a constant quality connection is ideal (and Telkom falls very short of this, but we wont go into that).

The crux of my post is that in March I am moving out into the sticks where ADSL does not exist at all, but MTN and Vodacom signals are fairly strong on cell phones.

What I needed to know was if MTNs 3G / HSPDA was any good for broadband usage? I do realise it is probably more expensive but I have no other options really other than to consider not moving to the country and simply moving into Nelspruit just to be able to get a reliable (Relatively) connection.

I use about 2 - 2.5 Gb of data a month, are they able to cater for this as well if the answer to the above was yes.

Also is MTN better at this than Vodacom, I am guessing they are.

Any comments, suggestions, advice etc also is appreciated.

Many Thanks
John

Dear John,

First things first

What I would do is check our 3G coverage map and see if we support 3G/HSDPA - MTN and Vodacom are pretty good in terms of throughput bearing in mind you're connected to a Wireless network so you have to take the number of user's, equipment, hardware, geographical area and many other things

Is MTN better than Vodacom - They both run the same technology when it leaves our network they both go via Telkom links

mm ok, so its basically a shot in the dark for most of it. I know MTN has coverage but the question obviously is how good it is. Guess I am going to have to go into the MTN center and ask em some questions and I hope htey are able to do a test or at the very least offer a money back gaurantee if it doesnt work out after I have gone and paid for the equipment etc

Cheers for your reply though.

@John

Don't you know someone that has a Data Card that you can try and see if it works for you?

Otherwise PM me and advise what area you're in and maybe I can try and make a plan for you
