Hi guys,

I'm buying a new car and the dealership are offering me a tracking device on rental for 36 months for R149 pm. I did some insurance quotes and I've noticed that without the tracker on the vehicle, the insurance premium only increases by R50 pm. So to me, from a financial standpoint, it would be cheaper to not take the tracker and pay a slightly higher premium.

But am I missing something here? Is there other added benefits of fitting a tracking device that warrant me paying the extra R100 pm? Any advice would be great!

The car is a 2015 Mazda 2 btw.

If the owner of the car gets hijacked, then the tracker would be very useful. Great feature if you live in JHB :)

if you are a responsible driver then a tracker is a nice thing to have similiar to having a dashcam in your car.

This is exactly why I have the Skytrax with Panic button. in 2005 I was hi-jacked and they drove off with me in the back, and nobody knew. Had the entry level tracker for insurance purposes. I will never be without that button again.

If you're going for a tracking device, you might find you'll get a better model if you go through your insurance provider. The dealership is just looking to boost their bottom line, I don't think they're going to do you any favours.

I'm paying R245/month for Skytrax through Outsurance, and back when I signed up that was around 60% of the quoted independent rate.

Skytrax is awesome for many reasons:
1: You can trust the guys at Tracker to actually have a real recovery team should you need it
2: You can locate the position of your car on Tracker's website, or by smsing your registration number to Tracker (only works for pre-authorised numbers). This is for those times where your wife takes the car, or wants to make sure you're safe.
3: You can activate Tracker's 'Car Guard' feature, which will send an sms alert to you if your car moves after you've armed the system.
4: Using your web portal, you can 'geofence' some areas on a map - 'go' areas and 'no-go' areas. If your car enters where it shouldn't, or leaves an area it needs to stay in, you'll get an sms notification.
5: Every so often you might get a phonecall from a helpful Tracker person if their system alerts them that you've driven into a dodgy area (happened to me when I took a few wrong turns in Sandton and ended up in Alexandria).

Sooooo... yeah, for me, all of the above is worth R245/month. Your mileage may vary, depending on how you intend to use it.
