Advice needed please - Bad speed on 10mb ADSL

Hi everyone

Apologies for a newbie question if it is one, but I'm so fed up it's not even funny anymore. I am signed up with Telkom on a 10mb ADSL line, uncapped. Since getting the line I've been complaining about bad speed from my side, barely ever hitting over 6mb and Telkom keeps telling me that it's because I'm too far from the exchange, but when their technician came out and tested with his modem, he got just over 10mb. I then followed his advice and bought a brand new modem, an Asus DSL-N16, just to have exactly the same problem with speed.

Any ideas or advice from your side? Fibre is not an option as we don't have any in our area yet.

I get on avg. about 9.6 mbps download and 0.86 upload. Been on the same exchange in PE for 18 years. My ISP is Afrihost having previously been with Telkom and MWEB. NetGear N300 Router.
