OK, Telkom said my line should be in end of the month now I need to look at adsl routers.

My brother and I will be sharing the cost of an uncapped account. Now what we would like to do is get an adsl router with an option that limits each pc to not use more than half the available bandwidth, unless the one pc is off or inactive with internet usage.

We are getting a 512 line, so each pc should not use more than 256 unless the other pc isn't using the bandiwdth, in which case the pc that is using the net can use more than 256.

Would it be possible to get a router with this functionality or will I have to set up a pc with smoothwall or IP cop?

As I dont have the funds for a secondary pc at the moment the router option will be far preferable.

Smoothwall. P4 with 2GB Ram and your settled.

Think a router with that functionality will be far more than a decent machine for Smoothwall.
I could be wrong but I think enough RAM and a Processor from year 2000+ and you should be fine.

Actually I think you mean 2000BC. But I agree 100% with McGuywer.

EDIT: 2GB RAM? You should be able to get away with 256MB on a LINUX install without any speed degradation. I've install an IPCOP on a p1 75Mhz with 32MB and never an issue.

Wasn't sure and didn't wanna go to low spec'd. You only need to get the box.

I think it will be much cheaper that a router like that.

According to one of the guys here at work a standard linux install lets a person rate limit ips.

Just thought a router would be an easier option.

You could always try find some router that accepts Open-wrt or DD-wrt - these 3rd party firmwares will allow traffic shaping per ip. You can also set it to burst depending on how many people are on. E.g. 2 people = line speed / 2 , 1 person = line speed / 1.
