My insurance company wants me to install a tracker. I don't like trackers, I don't want one and I don't want to waste any more money that I absolutely have to, and I don't want some greasy bonehead ripping my car to pieces installing one.

I've looked at Netstar and Tracker's websites, but they seem reluctant to advertise their prices on the websites (which is bloody annoying), does anyone have any idea what the cheapest, easiest to install system is?

Netstar Sleuth is the cheapest you can get. It is however easily circumvented and not very accurate unless a tracking vehicle picks up its signal nearby, but it is accepted by most insurance companies. Under R150pm

Try Beame - its accepted by insurance - they don't dismantle to install, can be installed by most Tiger Wheel & Tyre dealers and its like R80.00 a month.

And there they quietly added R5k to my finance cost for this crap, when I bought a car. Good thing I spotted it and summarily had it removed. Could not see any insurance discount I would get for tracking device.

I wonder which cars require tracker? Or could it be based on value?

I added a Polo yesterday (R187,000) and no Tracker was required.

They have now got a Sleuth Nano for R89 pm for 36 months.

Contacted them - there's a special for R59 a month. Looks like that will be hard to beat price-wise.

That's a huge amount considering they all seem to offer free installation.

Over R300 000 on my policy, which is currently with Santam, but they're on their final warning...

Ensure your insurers accept the system you choose prior to installing.
Some systems do not meet the requirements of certain insurer's. This applies specially to non automated systems.
R59 is very cheap.

Does your insurance require it, or suggest a lower premium if it is fitted?

I rather go with the higher premium...

Depends if your insurer has a deal with the tracking company. I got the Beame for R59 pm for King Price. Like I don't care if my car is recovered or not, just that its covered.

Me too, they insist on it. No premium difference, just no cover if you don't have it.

Agree with that too. I'd actually rather it's not recovered, just want to be paid out.

They asked who I'm with before quoting, but I'll check with the brokers before getting it fitted.

Must be a new(ish) thing, as my car was over that amount a few years back and I wasn't requested to fit one.

I think it's different with each insurance company. I'm also looking at changing companies - it might just be cheaper and easier. These guys and their attitude have been annoying me for a while already.

Have a look at all the perks from various cards\memberships you have. I had a few options and went with the Netstar for R75 pm on my virgin money cc.

The only issue with the cheap ones is that you need to phone to test the unit 3 times a year but as a plus it is self contained so no car power is used.
