Advice on buying a new computer

What is your opinion on desktops where the tower unit and screen are separate versus desktops where the tower unit and screen are integrated?

Is Lenovo a good brand?

Those all in one desktops are generally crap unless its an Apple. The problem is the price does not match the hardware. Spending the same money you will get a far better seperate tower and screen and it will be upgradeable.

Lenovo is a decent laptop brand.

Decide if you want a laptop or desktop and what you are going to be using it for.

That seems excessive for an iburst modem, look for a cell C / 8ta package rather maybe or check gumtree for a second hand usb iburst modem.

I see loads of iburst modems, desktop and usb on gumtree, R400-R900 range.

You do get pcmcia -> pci adapters

Where abouts are you, I actually ahve a stack of them lying around here.

The problem is I have an iBurst PCMCIA modem. This modem is incompatible with desktops and incompatible with most notebooks.

You do get PCMCIA adapter cards for desktop PCs.

Try compatibility mode. Otherwise "what do you expect when trying to run an eleven year old game on Windows 7?" LOL
