Since there are many advice-seeking threads, I thought I would also start one - always interesting to hear different opinions and comments.

I'm considering buying either a facelift Polo 1.2 TSi Comfortline (demo) or a Golf 6 1.4 TSI...budget is R200k, and I will put down R50k as deposit.

Benefits of the Polo - will have very little mileage, economical engine, less than a year old, most of the warranty and service plan still available, etc.

Benefits of the Golf - bigger car, more power, better specs?

Still single and don't have any kids, so I don't need a bigger car, but it would still be nice to drive one - but a decent Golf 6 in that budget will probably be out of warranty and service plan, or close to being out...

Also, one has to take into consideration the cost of insurance, etc.

When talking out of service plan, is a Golf significantly more expensive to maintain than a Polo?

Not considering any other brands/models/etc. so it won't help suggesting them - rather help me choose between the two above please!

I would rather buy a new ford fiesta ecoboost or buy the new focus.

Both your options are fine. They are both vws and will hold resale value.

Of your choices, the Golf.

why vw?

Kia, Hundai, Ford Honda
cheaper, lower service costs, and lower hijacking risk, therefor lower insurance.

personally it should be ford or kia as the options

VW should be so far down the list

If I had to choose between those two (which I would definitely not with R200k) it would be new Polo seeing as you don't have family and it would be latest with new gadgets (colour screen etc). Service plan would help too.

Golf 6 has aged terribly imo, especially non GTI models.

Before I even opened the thread I knew that most of the posts would be telling him to get something else. That's the MyBB way. Ignore the OP and answer a question he didn't ask :)

Out of the two, the Golf is better in the long run... Less depreciation and size might be necessary in 5 years or maybe before :D

I would do the Golf if you can.

The Polo is tiny inside by comparison, but the difference outside isn't all that much and it's not like you'll get into parking spaces easier with the Polo etc.

Thank you for all the replies so far...

Yes as I mentioned in the original post, I am not open to other suggestions...as everybody else I also have my preferences and likes/dislikes and like the ones who suggested (for example) Ford - there is a reason why you like Ford - just as I have my reasons for liking VW.

I am slightly open to Kia as well since I love the brand and drive a Kia myself, but the Rio 1.4 is way underpowered. Therefore I have to look at the Cerato 1.6, and you get year old ones with low mileage in my price range as well.

But I have always wanted to drive a VW so that is why I feel like getting one this time around.

Anybody knows how maintenance costs of a Golf compare to that of a Polo?

I would only go Golf if interior space is likely to be an issue during your ownership. The post-facelift Polo is as nice to drive as a Golf, will be (even) more economical and benefits from more modern electronic safety systems than Golf 6. Most notably on the latter, the Polos come standard with post-collision braking. Taking into account that you'd also be getting a much newer car I'd lean towards the Polo.

I can organise you a new one for not much more than your stated budget even...

Same engines more or less, should not be a difference.

Agreed...

Anyway between the two VW options the OP provided I think I would go for the f/lift Polo actually even though I am a Golf man.

You mention space not a big issue the latest Polo is a smart piece of kit.
