Hi guys

I need advice on a new DSLR camera. I have never owned one, but I need one the latest, Friday.

My budget is R7500.

My needs for the camera as follows:
-A lens for close-up objects and landscape
-Video recording capability for 30min or longer
-Large memory card to store the video

Not-so-important, but welcome:
-Flash
-Optical zoom
-Large aperture for high-speed shots.

Megapixel count isn't very important, but I guess the minimum should be eight.

Please do let me know your opinions

Thanks :)

I see. I've just been advised by friends, not to take a DSLR for my requirements.

I've now narrowed my choice to Nikon Coolpix P6000, Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3K, and Canon PowerShot G10.

Any thoughts?

There are only two DSLR cameras that can do video, currently. The Nikon D90 and Canon 5DmkII. Neither will fit into your budget, and neither can do 30 minutes.

I recommend you download the G10 manual and read the chapter about video modes. If it's like the G9's, they discuss the limits.

Also have a look at the G9. It has better video options, and is probably cheaper, if you can get a hold of it. It can do 4GB or one hour, whatever comes first. It has 1024x768 resolution, the G10 has only 640x480. It has time-laps mode too.

The G9 used to be my holy grail of p&s but since the lx3 and p6000 hit the market I'm not so sure. Im aiming to get the Nikon but if I was into video the lx3 would be tempting even with the obvious omission of an optical viewfinder.

Was hoping to get my hands on one at JNB international tonight but their camera selection was pretty bad.

What made you choose the Nikon?

May I suggest Camera World in London? They're prices are generally competitive if not cheap, and their service is good. £329.98 for th P6000 (R4,661.31 according to xe.com).

They're pretty easy to get to. From Tottenhamcourt road, walk west down Oxford street toward Oxford Street Circus. Go right in Newman street. Enjoy the Banksy graffiti on the wall directly ahead. Turn left into Eastcastle str and then right into Wells. They're just around the corner.

Koffiejunkie - comes with a built in GPS.

It has the optical viewfinder and gps tagging :) I'm not completely discounting the G9/10 though.

Thanks but I pretty much tend to avoid london whenever possible and this is going to be such a brief stay I might just be successful in doing so. :D I'm back again later in the year for a considerably longer stay so perhaps I'll have a pop in then.

ermmmm ... don't know how to tell you it, but those are NOT SLR's ..... the onliest SLR's that currently can do video is the Canon EOS 5D MII and some Nikon ;), and that is wayyyyy outside your budget .... about R35 000!!!!

Almost got it when I was at LHR . . . I would have had I known the RSA price was R2k more than the duty free Dixons. :o Someone is picking it up for me within the next few weeks. I just have to get it down to here.

Don't let them post it. S.A. customs whacked me £98 on my dad's £280 camera.
