I am considering getting an external flash for my 400D Canon but do not want to spend a fortune on an external flash.
I have 2 options and need to know if anyone has had experience with the following flash units:
1) Canon Speedlight 220 EX - does not have a tilt head which prevents me from using bounced lighting for flash shots.

2) Sigma Flash EF 500 DG ST - Is not a Canon product but is compatible with Canon.

I need to just have a better flash range than the pop-up flash and having a tilt head for bounced lighting is an added bonus.

Both these units are just over R1000 since I cannot justify the R2000+ for the Canon Speedlight 430EX or the Sigma 500 DG SUPER.

Any comments pse.

Pity - I bought the the Sigma 500 DG SUPER a couple weeks ago and it rocks.

But I'm thinking you didnt want to hear that :o Still - I've got only good things to say about Sigma so far.

Yes, I recall you talking about the Sigma SUPER - I think I will get the Sigma this weekend - desperately need a better flash than the pop-up and i want one i can bounce the light with.

Does the non-super have a remote slave function? I've been firing off the SUPER remotely using my 400d's built in flash and have been getting some interesting results.

On checking the specs, no - does not have that functionality :(- but then that's why its R1k cheaper :)

Your missus is going to kill you if she finds out what you been buying these days :)- but why get the cheaper Sigma when you already got the SUPER DG?
- Ah I see, use it on the camera and use the SUPER as the slave unit across the room,,, make sense.

@eitai2001 - was a bit worried re the quality but seems to be fine..

Yup :D

So why you worried about the quality?

I was under the impression that the Canon flash would be more compatible with the camera. I previously bought a 3rd party flash for a Minolta 35mm camera I had and the thing never worked properly in auto mode as the flash's contacts were not 100% compatible with the Minolta. I ended up buying a Minolta flash afterwards hence my misgivings re the Sigma flash - but the guy at the shop assured me it is 100% compatible with the Canon and I will not lose any functionality.
Just wanted to make sure - I don't believe salesmen sales talk.
