I moved into my Cape Town apartment last weekend. It has a grey Telkom box already installed. I plan to get ADSL line and data from Crystalweb but obviously I need to get the voice line activated first so that I have a phone number that CW can attach the service to so I went into the central Cape Town Telkom store on Monday with all my proof of address and ID and submitted my form to request connection.

I was told that Telkom couldn't give me an order number at that time but that it would be sent to me by SMS within 24 hours once the order was entered and then at some later date I would be contacted to arrange an engineer visit. 4 days later I still have no order number. I did go back to the Telkom store on Wednesday to confirm that the order was in the system and they said it was and that network services would contact me with an order number that evening or the following day (i.e. yesterday). Still nothing.

Is this normal? Is there anything anyone can suggest apart from going into the Telkom store every week (which luckily is only a 5 minute walk from my apartment) to check the order is still in the system? TelkomZA on this forum doesn't really seem active anymore.

Whatever people suggest I intend to pop into the store and check on my order weekly anyway because at my last place it took me 5 months to get a line installed, although admittedly that was a new installation, and at one point when nothing had happened for 6 weeks I went into the Telkom store (not the Cape Town one) to ask what was going on (for that order I did have an order number) and they found out that the order had been cancelled from the system with no notification or explanation and I had to start all over again. I really don't want to have that happen this time.

I'd heard that Telkom were bad but.....

Just call 10210. They will sort everything out.

Thanks. Stupidly I thought that I'd get better service from a store and that 10210 would be half an hour of hold-queue-hell followed by someone who wouldn't have any more info than the people in store. As it turned out the hold time on 10210 was only a few minutes and the customer services rep was great. She could see my details but, despite the Telkom shop telling me everything was OK, my order had been cancelled because of an issue with incomplete information so I would have been waiting forever to get any reply. I'm now due to get a callback on Monday to try and get the order accepted into the system at which point hopefully things will go more smoothly.

I've learned my lesson now, avoid the stores and use 10210.
