Advice on International Links Needed

Morning All,

We are currently looking to implement a link between us and Canada for an end-to-end or link into MPLS for a forest trust between our organization and our holding company in Montreal.

I had been tasks for researching a solution to accomplish this. I know for a fact that this WILL BE costly and we are prepared to send a bit of bucks. However I am not really sure of what solutions are out there. I am looking at the usual suspects such as:

- End to End diginets at close to R80k per month
- DSL into MPLS
- DSL into DM-VPN

If anyone can comment and make a few suggestions, it would be fantastic. Keeping in mind that between the two sites there will be a WAN Optimization in place. Both parties, us in JHB and them in Montreal have Riverbed appliances which will help with WAN traffic.

How much do you want to spend? Considering you have QoS/Optimization appliances on both ends, I would suggest looking at an MPLS solution.

Also, what do you intend doing on the line, i.e. how heavily will it be utilized? Simply for connectivity, or will there be heavy traffic crossing it? What kind of traffic, i.e. streaming media, file access, terminal services/App-V/Remote desktop, e-mail access, etc.?

Hi S,

This is basically only be for AD replication and accessing a few web bases apps and perhaps a bit of RDP traffic on either side of the forest trusts. The initial AD replication of course is going to be a bit intense but Riverbed will take care of that within a few replications and also the web traffic.

So no, we can assume there wont be too constant heavy traffic. I am planning on dropping a DC of our domain in on our side and a DC of mine in there site for the AD replication.

Makes sense?

I am leaning towards a MPLS solution, but what? DSL into MPLS or diginet into MPLS?

DSL into MPLS with a local DC on each end should sort you out. That's what I would do, anyways.
