Hi time to upgrade and my budget is around R5500.

Here is what I got so far
22" Samsung 226BW Lcd

Inno3d 8800GTX OC

Here is what I'm thinking of getting

Albatron 680i Sli motherboard-R1880
http://www.guru3d.com/article/mainboard/436/2/

Intel Core2 Duo E6750 - dual core 2.66ghz box cpu , with VT+TXT-R1852.88
OR
Intel Core2 Quadro Q6600 , bx80562q6600 - quad core 2.4ghz box-R2656.22

Mushkin XP 996523 DDR2-800 2GB (2 * 1GB Sticks) Kit CL4-R1550

Im still unsure of what PSU I will need considering that I might decide to Sli two 8800GTX's in future. Maybe 750W PSU would be sufficient?

Also Im undecided what I must go for the E6750 Dual Core or the Quad core.

I will use the pc mainly for gaming and graphic design.

IMO a good quality PSU is an integral component of a high end system. I prefer Antec and Coolermaster, but there are many other models that are just as good.

750W should be fine. If you want to check the power requirements for the rig you want to build try this site: http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

As for the Dual Core versus Quad...I would stick to Dual Core for now and use the cash saving to get the best PSU you can.
Game developers have only now started to develop games that take advantage of dual core processors, I think they still a way off getting games on the shelf that will take full advantage of quads. By the time that happens you probably ready for an upgrade anyway :)

Thanks for the advice do you think my choices for components are the right ones for my budget?

If my calculations are correct, if you get the MB you want, the Core2 Duo and the RAM, you already pretty close to your budget.

A good PSU to meet your future Sli needs will set you back a minimum of R1500. Probably more. That blows your budget right out the water.

I must admit I started to drool when I saw the specs on the motherboard but it's probably an overkill for your needs. I would try to find a board with less bells and whistles and save a few bucks.

Go with the cheaper CPU, quad core doesn't give many benfits atm, it's likely to be slower than the other chip for most uses right now.

Are you really going to need the SLI set up, that's already an insane card. You'll only need the SLI in a year or two, so you won't need a R1500 PSU right now. No point not buying one, but if you can't afford it you can always get something cheaper for now.

A good PSU and Motherboard is the basis of any good system.
For the most I tend to agree with what the rest of the chaps are saying.
Get that Motherboard. It looks good and cheap at the price.
The ASUS 680i SLI cost about a grand more.

Quad Cores...

Unfortunately, everybody else is right... Microsoft is far behind Technology... They developed an operating system that supports Dual cores and later support Quad Cores with the new Service Packs BUT it's a piece of **** and will always be like that.

If Microsoft could develop an operating system LIKE XP that uses around the same amount of RAM and visual memory to display the desktop and supports Dual-Core and Quad-Core optimization AND still be affordable THEN and only THEN would EVERYBODY be happy.

But for now, don't go with Quad-Core, it's useless. Rather go with a nice powerful Core 2 Duo.

ummm graphic design programs if involving rendering will make use of the quad and it seriously is far quicker than a dual core.

Something to think about, check if your graphic design programs will utilise the extra 2 cores.

Depends on what u want to do with the pc now, and in a years time.

Crysis, Alan Wake, DirectX 10, Unreal 3, etc... is comming out, so the question really is, do you want to play these new multi-threaded / hybrid-threaded applications ?

Or do you just want to watch a HD-DVD and surf the internet ?

I'd go for the Quad Core CPU

Other issue i see is your cpu fsb will be 1066, and ram 800. so yea, try to get it the same, 1:1 ratio

Thats whats intel is doing with their new 1333FSB and DDR3 combo's. Make sure the motherboard supports both 1066 FSB CPU or 1333 FSB CPU, DDR2 1066 or DDR3 1066 / 1333

I noticed that too. However I think we missing the point here a bit. WiseCrack wants to know if the components he chose are the right ones for his budget?

We all have our wish lists for our dream computer and can sink huge $$$ into it without even trying but that's not going to help WiseCrack keep to his budget :(

I still say go for the dual core, find the best board you can that will suit your particular needs and if you really set on running 2 of those insane cards in the future then make sure you get a decent PSU

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I'm going for what I mentioned in my first post.

I'll have to use my Asus 450W PSU for the time being as my budget will be blown on the components mentioned.

wisecrack im not sure if you can hang on eh but november the 9xxx series of nvidia it out eh but if you cannot wait go for 8800gtx

hmmm dunno if that 450 watt will cut it eh

i had a 450 and my pc would not boot with my 8800gts

killa Wisecrack already has an 8800. See first post.

Wisecrack enjoy your new rig :)
