I need some advice please. I have had my current AMD 3800 X2 for almost 5 year now. I also have a 9800gt graphics card

So I wantto upgrade and get:
i7 930 cpu
X58 motherboard
Nvidia 460 GPU
New RAM
New Hard drives

Then I read that a new socket is expected within a year to replace the 1366 socket. So now my thinking is +-1 year till the new socket comes out and 1 more year till it becomes affordable.

Im considering changes the CPU and MB to a highend AMD, its over R1000 cheaper, and then in two years I can move back to the new intel stuff.

Will the nvidia card play nicely with the AMD stuff?

What would you guys do, go for the Intel or the AMD (and wait it out)?

Thanks

Both camps are changing sockets soon. Anyway, what you using the rig for? And it does not matter what GPU you use, they are not affected by the brand of CPU you install.

Hey

Gaming, some SC2, black ops and whatever new games they dump on us next year.

I dual boot though between windows( games) and Linux (work and DLNA media server)

Ideally I would like to stick with Nvida for the card, as they have much better linux drive support than ATI.

It feels like Im buying at the wrong time- the cusp of the socket changes overs - I should wait till the new stuff is out, so the older stuff cost a bit less. Man, I dont know what to do?

AMD launching a new socket?

AMD launching a new socket?

Yes, very old news! Where you been? :p Its called Zambezi, the desktop version of Bulldozer. Launches Q3 iirc

Anyway for mostly gaming you will want to look at the i5 760 and the Phenom 955. Although Sandy Bridge is launching in January next year which is the replacement for the socket that the i5 760 is on.

So Sandy Bridge will be socket 1155? and it will be using 32mm die technology?

Wait, there is socket 1155 and 1366, which one is going to be replaced?

Current sockets from Intel are LGA1156 and LGA1336. 1156 will be replaced by 1155 (Sandy Bridge)

wth is the difference between 1155 and 1156?
lol gonna just break like 1 pin

these damn exams got me out of the loop. Thort intel was dumping 1366 and keeping 1156 coz few go for 1366? They change their plans yet again?

No, this has been the plan all along. LGA1336 may stick around (big if!!!!), but next year there will be two new sockets - LGA1155 (low to mid) and LGA 2011 (high end)

So Im gonna wait then, I still manage to play black ops with my current hardware, What is AMD going to be up to next year?

I want something thats going to be a bit future proof, maybe one cpu upgrade after the first two years, obviously my graphics card will get upgraded as well at some point, but Im not worried about that. Its more about whether or not they continue making cpu's that fit whatever motherboard I have.

AMD's doing bulldozer, their supposed second coming. Basically they gonna get "back in the game", sounds interesting and could be a game breaker; i hope so. For now DDR3 ram and say a 6800 series card will be the surer future proof components (compared to the others). Current AM3 boards may support the new cpus. My advice buy small now, splurge next year. If my timing is correct, you bought 939 as it was going out. Don't think you'd wanna be in that situation again (altho the m32sli deluxe and 3800 was sweet enough to go 5 years)

Btw, got me a x3 440, am3 board and 2 gigs ram now the other day. Was like R1800. Then added a 5770 afterwards for R1400. The rig plays black ops and sc2 no probs. Basically anything no probs. I'll have no worries if the board doesn't support the newer cpus; it was dirt cheap and it can go a couple of years.

this is what i hate about intel. Forever moving over to a new socket. LGA 775 was the only socket that lasted more than a couple of years. Would suck if they discontinue 1366 so soon, those boards came in at >R2000

Best is to get a 1090T. Will last you just as long as your 3800x2 did.

Dude intel have had i7 and i5 out for sometime and i can still get lga775 cpu's. Intel do not cut off support after 1 year. I can still buy lga775 motherboards. It is like wondering if ddr 2 would disappear after ddr 3 was released.

You should wait though because January is not far away.

Thanks Guys, Im gonna wait till next year, Im OK for now, I still manage to own on some of the black ops games :)

I hear ATI is WAYYY more efficient at the moment. I dunno details, but basically you'll get a lot more heat in your case, need a bigger PSU, and increase running cost (electricity).

FUD

Is that the most intelligent thing you can say? How about substantiating your opinion rather than just farting verbally.
Power consumption of various graphics cards

Tell me, what does power consumption of graphics cards have to do with a decision between Intel and AMD CPUs? Reading is good for you... Next time, read a bit more, insult a bit less.
