Advice on new netbook

You could buy the Samsung NC10 (from us :) ) or the Lenovo Ideapad S10e and get Windows Vista Home Premium seperate with a free Windows 7 upgrade coupon, and we could do it all for +- R4600.00.

Not sure why you'd want to run Windows 7 on a netbook anyway!?

Rather go for a new slimline 13" - checkout the new Lenovo U350's we've gotten in recently.

Does the Lenovo Ideapad G530 also come with a win7 upgrade? Or should I wait until win7 comes out - would it then come with win7 preinstalled?

have read through all the posts..... personally I think you need a slightly bigger screen, 13.3". The best around that does what you want & more would be the LENOVO SL300 or consider the S10.

Looks as though the NC10 is the best netbook in SA at the moment. The Compaq Mini isn't too far behind...has one awesome keyboard.

Just out of interest... does anyone own a Aspire One A110? How's the trackpad on that thing?

I've got an NC10 and the screen is 10" which I dont think is too small at all but it comes down to personal preference... go try one out in the shop then decide cause no amount of looking at websites will ever help you decide unless you see the laptop physically...

There is a stripped down version of Windows 7 available. Installs only to around 2gb and is apparently quite quick.
But it's a cracked version of the RTM, so I suppose you can always buy yourself a copy of Windows 7 and then use the Tiny version for your netbook.

I made my own version of the "stripped down" version of Windows 7 using vlite. It installed to just over 2Gb as Charlie said. BUT, it is not as quick as implied, I tried it on an Aspire One, and it was as slow as XP. Granted, it was the 8Gb SSD version, so only 512Mb of RAM which is certainly not enough for Windows 7, IMO.

My stripping could have been done sub-optimally, I am no expert in vlite, I just followed guides on the net. I would like to hear from others who also tried it.

Hilton, the SL300 is a very decent notebook, and I would much rather have that than the NC10. But the price is way out of my range, unfortunately.

I am going over to Asia in December, maybe I will be able to find something cheaper over there, who knows?

You can buy Kohjinsha notebooks in Singapore. :) Also NEC ones. ^_^

Check out Sim Lim Square for unofficial stuff or Best Denki if you want an official store - Best Denki is located in the Takashimaya Mall on Orchard Road. ^__^
