Hey guys! Looking to buy a new pc so i need some input please. Its primarily a home pc but will be used for work if necessary to run Solidworks. Also I'm practically a noob so I don't know anything about overclocking.
1) i7 920 (DO version???)
2) Asus mobo, which one? (is the Asus Rampage II Extreme worth it?)
3) Graphics card (R3000-R5000) what do you guys recommend?
4) PSU Corsair HX1000 (probably way overkill)
5) Thermalright Ultra-120 True Black
6) Ram (what do you guys suggest?)
7) HDD (suggestions?)

Already got a case(CM-Sniper) and monitor(P2370).
 
ok for graphics card you want a 5870 and you want the Corsair tx 650 Watt power supply.

You forgot to add in a 64gig or 128gig gskill falcon drive.
 
What is your budget? It is impossible to give advice without it!

How long should I cut my string?
 
Rampage II extreme is not worth it if you don't overclock, same goes for the TRUE. Rather get a P6T and use the stock intel cooler which will leave you with more cash in your wallet to spend on a better GPU (5970 :D) and possibly a SSD
 
Thanks for the advice guys. I'm looking to spend about R20k on a new pc excl the monitor and case. Would the Rampage II Extreme be a good mobo to start learning about oc'in? Ok so the gpu is goin to be a 5870(mayb a 5970;)) what's a good brand? Thx

I'd say have a look at sapphire but they're all the same really.
 
Generally i find spending 4-5k on a mobo pointless, you could the money saved buying a cheaper mobo into a strong vga card or just save the money. The p6t isa good option i think.

At the moment i think the 5970 is over priced. Rather buy a 5870 and possibly try save some cash and pump out another 5870 for crossfire :D

Smallish SSD for OS partition if there is budget left.

Might also want to think about a proper UPS. The Eskom situation isn't going to get any prettier in the next few years.
 
The P6T and the MSI X58 PRO-E boards mentioned above are good air overclockers. The Rampage 2 Extreme would just be pure overkill if you're not going to have wc or OC with DICE and the like.

I'd get 3x2GB OCZ Platinum CL7 1600MHz RAM too (wait, i already got it :P)
