I am living in the UK but have recently convinced the company I am contracting to to allow me to work remotely from Cape Town (where I am from).

While down on holiday in CT I tried connecting to the company's network (in the US) from a few locations and what I found is that using some connection types I was not able to get through the network authentication.
It worked when I tried through a diginet line, an unshaped ADSL line as well as dialup to my UK IPS. It did not work through 2 other ADSL lines one of which was a basic home ADSL, I don't know about the other. So I assume the problem is down to latency(?)

Can anyone shed some light on why this would happen and what products may be the best to use? I would consider HSDPA, etc. if it was more likely to work better.

There is not to many reasons why it should not work over a Diginet or ADSL line.

The questions are more firewall or port forwarding related?

Which or what type of VPN client are you using / trying.

My guess now is that the ports used could have been blocked.

I dont think its down to latency.
The pcs you were using was it the same pc all the time or was it a company laptop you plugged into it?
How far would you get when trying to login to citrix?
Would you even get the front login page?
What sort of authentication is it (rsa token/user/pass)?

I work in the UK and have used citrix from Cape Town many a time.

Using my own laptop which I use from home(UK) it worked on the diginet line but not from the home ADSL (my parents).
Using a friends laptop it worked on his unshaped ADSL but not from a company ADSL line.

I got to the rsa token authentication password prompt and entered the details, submit, then a couple seconds later the password prompt again. I though maybe because of the token re-generating every minute latency could be an issue. But it works on a very slow dialup connection.

I would suggest trying again on the line, could it have been at that time ur token was disabled?
Did you get in contact with your helpdesk staff as they would have been able to see what is happening at the time with your RSA token.

When using the adsl line at home were you using wireless? as it may then be a issue with port fwrding.Plug it in the router and give it another try.

I did contact the helpdesk who confirmed the token was fine and the server reported a failed login attempt. They also gave me alternative login details from another token and that failed too.

On each attempt I was wired to the router and the home ADSL had no port forwarding set up.
